AtlasLayerRequest gains window_center/window_n (serde-default, absent
= whole-body, wire back-compat; demux untouched — up_to stays the
discriminator). DistrictWindowLayer echoes center/n + six parallel
arrays (morphology, elev_q, temp_dc i16 with the region sentinel,
moisture_q, vegetation incl Marine=6, glaciation).
Serving per the amendment's binding model: NEVER inline —
GenWorkItem::DeriveWindow rides the Rayon queue, completion drain
caches into DistrictWindowCache (bounded FIFO 256; no staleness by
D-227 purity, capacity bound only), serve_district_window polls the
cache and returns Pending-shaped None until derived. Per-connection
coalescing: submit_window supersedes a still-pending item for the
same (ConnectionId, body) — the surviving item is the newer one,
proven by dedicated tests.
TerrainAnalysis decision (option b, numbers in ticket/PR): re-derive
via run_layer1 in the DeriveWindow branch rather than caching ~1.5MB
x 50 LRU slots (~100MB permanent, the exact D-203 bloat T-1044's own
text guarded against); ~45ms one-time on the Rayon path, invisible to
the tick thread. T-1044 confirmed within-cascade-only (cascade.rs:358
still drops the analysis before BodyWorldState) — the fork was open.
Window derive loop promoted from aliveness_probe::render_window_panels;
determinism promoted from probe-only proof to a real test (two passes
byte-identical). New fixture atlas_response_ready_with_window
exercises all six arrays incl. the airless sentinel and Marine; three
existing fixtures gain district_window: None. Server clamps window_n
to 1..=DISTRICT_WINDOW_MAX_N=64 (never trust the wire).
1774/1774 lib + 19/19 bridge_tcp green.

ZoningType gains PartialOrd/Ord (DistrictType T-994 mirror) for the
dominant_zoning declaration-order tie-break. layer_proxy:
QuarterFootprintEntry/QuarterFootprintLayer (BTreeMap keyed by
city_id; density_avg_pct floor-mean, dominant_* mode with
declaration-order tie-break, landmark/corridor counts) +
build_quarter_footprint_layer gated None on empty state.quarters;
sixth AtlasLayerResponse field wired into all construction sites;
growth-ceiling doc updated to say the whole-body budget is consumed
(what carries a seventh is T-1124's design, resolved in the same
branch's amendment). Placements whose derived Layer4Quarter id is not
yet in state.quarters are SKIPPED (skeleton gen is async Low-priority
— entries may be a proper subset; client decodes defensively). Stale
TODO(#957) removed (premise predates T-957 landing).
Tie-break bug caught by its own test: Iterator::max_by_key over a
BTreeMap returns the LAST max on ties — backwards from
declaration-order-first; replaced with an explicit forward walk that
replaces only on strictly-greater count.
gen_fixtures: populated RegionGridLayer (T-1118 replay coverage) +
QuarterFootprintLayer literals in the ready fixture; msgpack fixtures
regenerated via make fixtures. Note: landmark_count is inert on real
data today (BlockSkeleton.landmark hardcoded None until landmark
placement lands); fixtures use non-zero counts to exercise the logic.
5 new unit tests + populated round-trip; atlas:: 549 green.

CascadeLayer::Region appended per the enum's append-only Ord rule (depends only on seed/body_params/heightmap dims — documented); BodyWorldState.regions BTreeMap per the districts precedent; RegionGridLayer dense row-major all-integer encoding (season/weather repr(u8) discriminants, mean_temp deci-degC i16 with i16::MIN airless sentinel, moisture_q u8); build_region_grid mirrors build_district_grid; protocol.gd region_grid passthrough (visual overlay deliberately out of scope); wire fixtures regenerated via make fixtures. atlas:: suite 507 green.

T-960: RoadGraphLayer (L2 edges/junctions, MaintenanceAuthority, rail flag, named routes) + SettlementLayer (name/position/size-class/is_capital/is_port from T-955 placements) as new Option fields on AtlasLayerResponse — T-1046 precedent; layer_proxy doc comment corrected (cascade runs through RoadGraph, client up_to ignored). T-949: new StarMapRequest/StarMapResponse (raw JSON passthrough of the star_map_data.json bake) + CityNamesRequest/CityNamesResponse (atlas_city_names via CityContextReader) with defense-in-depth Sol exclusion (GJ-0 system id OR settlement_wave='origin', D-236). Inbound demux extended with mandatory boolean discriminator fields (serde ignores unknown fields — optional-shape sniffing would be ambiguous); AtlasLayerRequest unchanged. SimBridge trait +2 methods, implemented on TcpBridge + LocalBridge. CityPlacement/CityRecord gained name/population/is_capital (BodyWorldState cache-hit path stays DB-free). ~30 new unit tests incl. demux disambiguation + Sol branches; gen_fixtures extended for road/settlement samples.

T-1044: run_layer1 now returns TerrainAnalysis (carried transiently on
CascadeSnapshot, dropped after the district + road-graph passes), eliminating the
redundant per-body drainage::analyze + TerrainAnalysis::analyze re-run flagged by
PERF/TODO(T-1044). Not persisted on the LRU-cached state (D-203/T-1048 size concern).
T-1047: basin_direction is now derived from the real D8 thalweg. run_layer1
aggregates a per-district dominant D8 direction from the live fdir grid (carried
transiently on DrainageResult), threaded via Layer1Output.district_basin_dirs ->
derive_all_districts -> DistrictProfile.basin_direction; derive_chunk_context reads
it directly. Removed the false derive_basin_direction (it branched on ocean_fraction_q
then read seed bits despite a doc comment claiming an elev_q/slope_q D8 proxy) +
corrected the module contract. D-239 §8 (D8 thalweg) now actually honoured.
1559 tests pass; golden byte-identical (district_basin_dirs is #[serde(skip)], transient).

Server half of wiring the derived tier into production. The D-225 proxy
(AtlasLayerResponse) carried only Layer1Output, so the Atlas could not show the
DistrictProfile tier that the cascade derives. Adds DistrictGridLayer (cols/rows
+ row-major MorphologyZone discriminants + elev_q for relief shading) and
build_district_grid(), populated on a cache hit. Because the response is
rmp_serde msgpack end-to-end, the new field reaches the client automatically.
This is the planetary-scale coarse grid (the Atlas map view); the on-demand 2km
derive_district (T-1077) is for in-world Phase 5, not the map. MorphologyZone
gains Copy (fieldless repr(u8) enum; additive).
Next: client decode (protocol.gd) + the D-226 generation overlay in the Atlas
viewer.

Close the last D-234 piece — terrain water-direction extraction wired through
to founding orientation and the quarter waterfront rule:
- Layer 1: TerrainAnalysis::water_bearing — 8-octant integer bearing toward the
nearest water from the water_dist gradient (D-010, no atan2). Stored on
GeographicAttractor.water_bearing (360 = none).
- #956 founding orientation: coastal/river settlements now get a real
water-facing bearing (the anchoring attractor's), replacing the 0 stub.
- #957 waterfront rule (D-234b): the water-facing quarter edge (from the
settlement's Coastal founding orientation) drops its block setback to 0 so
buildings present flush to the quay (dock-orthogonal). Typed Edge + coastal_edge
+ per-block gating.
Golden + atlas_response fixture rebaked (additive water_bearing field only).
8 new tests. All integer-deterministic (D-010).
Pending: the waterfront rule reads context.founding_orientation, which
city_context_reader still stubs to Cardinal — real per-settlement orientation
reaches quarter generation once the Layer-3 placement -> Layer-4 GenerateSkeleton
dispatch is wired (the remaining cross-layer integration).

DrainageBasin gained a territorial_status field, so the Layer-1 golden and the
atlas_response msgpack fixture pick it up. Both changes are additive/
representational — basin/attractor/river selection is unchanged.
- cascade_golden.rs: pass None dominant_faction; golden rebaked (only
"territorial_status": "FrontierUnclaimed" added per basin).
- gen_fixtures.rs: set the new field in the atlas_response generator; fixture
regenerated.

Wire the existing attractor-matching engine (#919/#925) into the
generation cascade as Layer 3, and make the whole placement-scoring path
integer-deterministic.
Layer 3 (D-211):
- CascadeLayer::Settlement + Layer3Output (placements) on the snapshot;
BodyWorldState gains a `placements` field (the D-203 hot cache).
- run_layer3 runs the five-phase match_cities against Layer-1 attractors
via the authored D-195 compatibility matrix; pure function of
(attractors, cities) — no RNG. cities are passed in by the caller so the
cascade stays DB-free and testable. A `// cache seam` marks where a
persistent cache wraps it later (#1021).
- gen_queue passes &[] for now (Topography needs no cities); the runtime
settlement read (gen_queue/layer_proxy) is the #955 follow-on.
Integer determinism (D-010 / D-227 — D-195 amended):
- Wiring match_cities into the deterministic cascade made its f32 scoring
a live cross-platform divergence risk (a near-tie comparison or the
Hungarian's f32 reductions can round differently per platform → a
different world from the same seed). Converted the entire path to
integers: CompatibilityMatrix is a 0-100 affinity table; attractor
strength is 0-100 and terrain cost is a percent (100 = baseline),
quantized once at the Layer-1 feature boundary; cell_score, the
Hungarian, and CityPlacement.score are i64. No f32 in any placement or
ranking decision.
- Layer-1 golden fixture rebaked: confirmed selection/positions are
unchanged (same 256 attractors, 93 river cells) — only the strength/cost
representation changed.
Tests: lib green (1292); new settlement_layer_places_cities_deterministically
covers placement + determinism + propagation into BodyWorldState.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Two Layer-1 generation fixes surfaced by the per-layer atlas viewer:
- Layer1Output now carries grid_w/grid_h (the downsampled working-grid the
positions live in). The client maps overlays from these, so the scale is
correct for any source heightmap resolution rather than assuming the texture
size — fixes overlays projecting at half scale into a corner.
- Drainage basin boundaries are traced as ordered, non-self-crossing contours
via Moore-neighbour tracing instead of an angle-from-centroid sort. The sort
produced star-shaped, self-crossing polygons for concave basins that rendered
as straight chords across the map.
Golden (cascade_layer1.json) and the cross-language atlas_response_ready
fixture regenerated. 100 atlas lib tests + the new tracer test pass.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.7 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Client half of the layer-stream protocol (codec only; transport wiring next).
- protocol.gd: encode_atlas_layer_request (bare {body_id, up_to} map so the
server demux routes it to the proxy, not the PlayerInput array) and
decode_atlas_layer_response (-> {body_id, status, error, layer1}; returns null
for non-atlas frames, e.g. a snapshot, so receive_bytes can disambiguate).
- gen_fixtures.rs: cross-language fixtures (atlas_response_ready/pending/
not_found) from real rmp_serde output, matching the test_protocol.gd pattern.
- test_protocol.gd: 5 tests decode the fixtures + verify a snapshot is not
mistaken for a response + the request encodes to the right shape. 68/68 pass.

Sprint 37 dead-code sweep closing out two stale supersession chains:
#877 (D-167, 2026-03-24): Removes HeritageRoot type alias and
ZonePaletteModifier::Heritage variant from server/src/simulation/
generator.rs. The 7 abstract heritage roots were retired in favour of
the corridor cultural system; these two stubs were the only remaining
references.
#878 (D-032 + cascade rule): Strips the entire CharacterArchetype
(Smuggler/Detective) trace from the server. Per lead direction
2026-04-21 and the development cascade (CLAUDE.md), character/NPC/
verb-differentiation/monologue code is Phase 6 detail that should
not exist in code yet. The running archetype trace was pre-cascade
filler, not production — production is only the client's character-
creation UI and insert screens (client follow-up in #882).
Deleted:
- CharacterArchetype enum + StartupMessage.character_archetype field
- archetype_verb_label() + archetype branch of apply_phase2_verb_filter
(D-057 character-verb differentiation — marked superseded)
- MonologueState.character partitioning
- Gauntlet archetype plumbing (setup_gauntlet no longer takes an archetype)
- server/content/schemas/drama_module.schema.yaml (zero Rust consumers)
- server/content/modules/tier1/smuggling_ring_v0_1.yaml
- server/tests/archetype_monologue.rs (regression guard for the removed system)
- server/tests/v01_integration_playthrough.rs (archetype-dependent)
Decision updates:
- decisions/content.md D-032 supersession rewritten to cite the cascade
(v0.2 drop invalidated the prior D-117 framing).
- decisions/content.md D-035 tag taxonomy: `character` enum footnote
updated; field noted as unused, do not reintroduce without a
confirmed Phase 6 design.
- decisions/perception.md D-057: archetype-verb differentiation marked
superseded.
Also bundles the types.rs version-field removal from #874 since the
file was already touched here.

Per R-012: delete conversation.rs, both overheard content files, and
remove all 6 wire-up points (social_plugin, bridge/types, monologue,
voice/integration). Protocol version 22 → 23. Scope confirmed by
#842 audit — npc/ and content/global/ untouched. Surviving NPC
components (NpcName, NpcColorIndex, NpcConversation) migrated to
simulation/npc_components.rs for use by D-080 knowledge propagation.
Also applies pre-existing cargo fmt debt (names.rs and 4 others).

Per-player settings via rusqlite (bundled, zero runtime dep). Server
owns the settings DB; client sends ChangeSettings commands over IPC.
Extensible key-value with typed columns (String/Int/Float/Bool).
Protocol bumped to v20 with settings_response in ObserverSnapshot.

Protocol v17: add state_hash (desync detection) and sim_errors
(structured error reporting) to ObserverSnapshot. Add SimError,
SimErrorKind, SimErrorBuffer types. Wrap main loop app.update() in
catch_unwind — on panic, send a final SimError snapshot before exit.
Report recoverable deserialization errors to client via SimErrorBuffer.
Compute per-tick state hash from player position + NPC count + tick.
Update all test fixtures and golden files for protocol v17.

Updates all client-side msgpack test fixtures and server test
harnesses to include the new triangle_crisis_events field added
in protocol v16.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- gen_fixtures.rs: version comments now say PROTOCOL_VERSION instead
of hardcoded 14, so they stay correct across bumps
- run-ipc-benchmark: remove --iterations flag that was parsed but
never forwarded to the Rust test (compile-time constant governs)

Test infrastructure (#200): Layer 3 integration test entry point,
three-layer architecture documented per D-030.
Information boundary tests (#272): 4 negative tests proving no
passive KG leakage, LOS fog holds, tier boundary holds, save
isolation per NPC.
1063 tests passing, 0 failures.

Add three new ObserverSnapshot fields for client Sprint 18 tickets:
poi_list (Vec<PoiWire>) for minimap #151, examine_result
(Option<ExamineResultWire>) for #174, player_knowledge
(Option<PlayerKnowledgeWire>) for journal #264. POI list populated
live from KG-discovered PointOfInterest components. KG dump
serializes entity/fact knowledge with confidence, source, and state.

Tyre #1: Extract run_dialogue_pipeline() shared helper — eliminates ~60
lines of duplication between process_talk_interaction and
process_dialogue_response (L1-L4 pipeline).
Hoshe #1: process_dialogue_response now updates ActiveDialogue with
current tick on follow-up selection — prevents stale started_tick.
Tyre #4: process_dialogue_response now updates InteractionMemory on
follow-up — multi-turn conversations are visible in history.
Hoshe #6 / Tyre #6: handle_dialogue_response adds server-side range
check (CLOSE_RANGE), matching Talk/Confront pattern (D-010 info
boundary).
Hoshe #2: Weighted selection fallback replaced with unreachable!() —
score_line always returns >= 1, so the fallback was dead code.
Hoshe #3: assert!(false, ...) → panic!() in serialization.rs (clippy).
Hoshe #4: SetFacing and TeleportToHub added to roundtrip test.
Hoshe #5: setup_dialogue_response_world inlined (trivial pass-through).
Tyre #2: Doc comment on DialogueCooldownTracker explains per-player-global
design choice (line IDs are NPC-scoped per D-035, no collision risk).
Tyre #3: CONFRONTATION_LINES comment updated with TODO for D-028/D-035
migration.
Tyre #5: DialogueResponse fixture added for cross-language GDScript
testing (input_dialogue_response.msgpack).

Regenerate all msgpack test fixtures with tell_state and follow_state
fields. Update golden proof_room snapshot. Adjust serialization and
bridge tests for new ObserverSnapshot fields.

Implements server-authoritative per-word occlusion for NPC conversations.
ConversationEventBuffer drains into ObserverSnapshot each tick so the client
receives only words audible from the player's position. Updates test fixtures
to include the new conversation_events and conversation_ended fields.

Server-tracked zone_id on VisibleTile for D-073 zone crossfade and
D-059 deep fog temperature tint. ZoneMap resource backed by BTreeMap,
observer enrichment in snapshot assembly. Backwards-compatible: v10
payloads deserialize with zone_id: None.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adds rng_seed: Option<u64> to ObserverSnapshot. The WRONG button (#507) captures
inputs.jsonl and seed.txt for replay, but seed.txt was writing "unavailable"
because the server did not include the RNG seed in ObserverSnapshot.
Changes:
- bridge/types.rs: PROTOCOL_VERSION 9→10, rng_seed field with serde(default,
skip_serializing_if = "Option::is_none") for backward compatibility
- perception/observer/mod.rs: inject Res<SimRng> into compute_observer_snapshot,
populate rng_seed: Some(rng.seed()) each tick
- All test files: add rng_seed: None to ObserverSnapshot constructors
- tests/serialization.rs: bump protocol_version_constant assertion 9→10
- Regenerate msgpack fixtures and golden file for protocol v10
Completes the WRONG button capture loop: replays can now fully reproduce
observed bugs with the exact RNG seed from the capture.

Implements 4 completed tickets + partial progress on 2 more:
- #93 Tier marker components (ActiveSim, BackgroundSim, StateSaved + TierPlugin)
- #138 Information tag schema (ObserverAccess enum in knowledge/types.rs)
- #124 Sound event system (SoundEventEmitter, SoundEventQueue, bridge wiring)
- #193 Line previewer CLI (line_preview binary with filter/explain/sequence modes)
- #94 Active tier simulation (in progress — With<ActiveSim> filters)
- #139 Component-level access control (in progress — filter_by_access)
Updates snapshot fixtures and test golden files for new sound_events field.

Cross-room transition tests (server/tests/cross_room_transitions.rs):
- T1: sprint suppresses interaction buffer, restores on Walk (D-055)
- T2: CarriedBy survives room transition — no TilePosition leak (D-065)
- T3: pause mid-corridor discards movement, Unpause resumes (D-031)
- T4: KnowledgeGraph persists across player position change (D-041)
- T5: entity knowledge downgrades Direct→KnowsDetails on LOS exit (D-060)
- T6: eavesdrop cut immediately on first movement out of corner (D-071)
- T7: confrontation verb disappears on retreat beyond MID_RANGE=5 (D-057/D-070)
- T8: Sprint blocks eavesdrop accumulation, Careful enables it (D-055+D-071)
All 8 tests pass. Test suite grows from 545 → 563 (18 tests added across sprint).
Tests use direct ECS World + Schedule pattern; T3 uses full App + SimulationPlugin.
Test suite expansion:
- content_scaling.rs: max_npc_pack_behavioral_regression + stress tests (#513)
- golden/proof_room_tick_10.json: updated golden file for gauntlet world changes
- golden_suite.rs, serialization.rs, bridge_ipc.rs, bridge_tcp.rs: adapted to
new world entity count and wire types
- gen_fixtures.rs, perf_bench.rs, content_runtime.rs: minor test adaptations

New CognitiveDelay component buffers perception events before emitting
KnowledgeEvents. Normal delay: 6 ticks (0.6s), urgent: 3 ticks (0.3s).
Drain system runs after emit_observation_events, before process_knowledge_events.
Adds pending_recognitions to ObserverSnapshot (protocol v7) for client
fog entity visualization. Includes cancellation when entity leaves LOS.
Monologue fires during delay (not after) per D-060 — cross-system
wiring deferred to follow-up ticket #451.
Ref: D-060 (cognitive delay), D-031 (10 tps), D-059 (fog layers)

Three fixes to make the gameplay loop functional end-to-end:
- Add Interactable component to NPC spawn so E-prompt detection works
- Build monologue trigger system (enter_location + time_idle) with
MonologueBuffer/MonologueState components, wire through ObserverSnapshot
as current_monologue field, decode on client and display via HUD
- Change PlayerAction::Interact from unit to struct variant carrying
optional target_entity_id and verb fields
Bumps protocol version from 4 to 5. Regenerates MessagePack fixtures.
All 200 tests pass (170 unit + 30 integration).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Server was sending visible_tiles without tile type data, so the client
could not distinguish floor from wall in live mode. Add TileKind enum
(Floor/Wall/Door/Object) to VisibleTile, populated from WalkabilityMap
in the NaturalVision perception query. Update test fixtures to include
the new field. Uses #[serde(default)] for backward compatibility.

Implement compute_nearby_interactions system that detects entities
within close (≤2) and mid (≤5) Manhattan distance, computes
available verbs per D-060 spec. NPCs get Talk+Observe at close
range, Observe-only at mid range; PersonOfInterest flips priority.
Objects get Examine. Results populate nearby_interactions[] on
ObserverSnapshot v4. Bump protocol version 3→4. Implements #404.

- Filter remembered entities by z-level (Hoshe + Tyre warning)
- Skip remembered ghosts on currently visible tiles (Hoshe warning)
- Bump ObserverSnapshot version to 3 (Tyre suggestion)
- Add edge case tests: visible tile collision, different z-level,
knowledge without position (Hoshe suggestion)
- Regenerate msgpack fixtures for v3

VisibleEntity now carries relationship state (D-033 entity color) and
observation type (Visible vs Remembered). compute_observer_snapshot
queries the player's KnowledgeGraph to overlay relationship data on
visible entities and include remembered (not-in-LOS) entities as fog
ghosts at their last known position. Regenerated msgpack fixtures.

Tyre #1: Added Rust-generated input_batch_two.msgpack fixture for
bidirectional D-030 Layer 1 symmetry (Vec<PlayerInput>).
Tyre #2: Added all_fixtures_deserialize Rust test that reads every
.msgpack fixture and verifies it deserializes (corruption guard).
Hoshe #3: Added test_decode_snapshot_malformed_entities_counted test
verifying the decode_errors counter on D-010 boundary violations.
45 client tests, 54 server tests pass.
