THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH
A conditions-accurate reference document for the independently mobile citizen.
Published by Adams & Ford Publishing Syndicate, Parallax (GJ 280A). Annual subscriptions modestly priced. No advertising. No sponsored content. The Guide accepts no Syndic partnerships, which is one of the few things about its operations that the Lattice Commission has never found cause to question.
Preface
The Settled Reach contains three hundred and one inhabited star systems connected by a gate network that humanity did not build and does not fully understand. This Guide covers all of them, or intends to — a distinction that matters because three of our field researchers have not filed in over eight years, and several systems in the deep frontier have proven difficult to leave on the schedule originally planned.
What follows is organized by sector, beginning with the core systems and moving outward through the four cardinal reaches. Each entry has been researched by a correspondent who has been to the system, used its transit, eaten its food, and talked to the people its official documentation does not mention. The entries are opinionated. They are not partisan. They describe what a place is actually like, which is occasionally different from what a place's governance would prefer to have described, and which has, on two occasions, resulted in formal protests to the Concord Assembly. Both protests were noted, filed, and not acted upon. Both systems' entries now include a parenthetical noting the protest.
The Guide does not endorse factions, systems, or Assembly delegates. It does not predict outcomes. It does not offer investment advice, though several entries contain observations that financial analysts have subsequently found useful, a fact Adams & Ford Publishing Syndicate notes with satisfaction and without liability.
Readers seeking the Commission's official system profiles will find them thorough, accurate, and available through standard institutional channels. Readers seeking to know what a system feels like when you step off the freight platform at third bell with a transit visa and no contacts — that is what this Guide is for.

The Core — 25 systems. The institutional heart of the Reach: the capital, the archives, the fleet, the factories, the farms, and the places where the people who run all of these go to have dinner.

The North Reach — 50 systems. The corridor that stretches toward the galactic north, where the Commission's coverage grows thin and the systems that have learned to manage without it have developed their own ideas about how things should work.

The South Reach — 50 systems. The long southern arm, supplied through chokepoints, monitored by checkpoint systems whose Commission offices have developed working interpretations of the regulations that Sirius has not formally reviewed.

The East Reach — 51 systems. The eastern frontier, where the older settlements give way to the more recent activations and the question of who governs what is frequently answered with "it depends on who you ask."

The West Reach — 50 systems. The western corridor, including the systems that consider themselves culturally distinct from the core and the systems that consider the distinction academic.

The Deep Frontier — 75 systems. The outermost ring: recent activations, contested territories, systems where the Guide's correspondents are the only institutional presence some residents have seen in years. Entries may be incomplete. See above, re: field researchers.
