Three centuries of working the same soil in dim K-type light have produced a community that does not feel the need to explain itself. Marib is a straight continuation of the Cairn pocket push into the deep north — Arab-heritage farming families who followed the corridor outward and stayed. They arrived with a clear purpose and have not deviated from it. The name recalls an ancient Earth city that dammed a river and fed a civilization from dry ground for a thousand years, and the ambition folded into that naming is characteristic.

Supply Dependency

Marib feeds itself and exports modest grain and legume surpluses back toward Sawad and the inner corridor. The agricultural systems here are mature — three hundred years of worked soil, adapted crop varieties, irrigation infrastructure built in the first century and maintained since. The K-type star gives less light than Earth-standard but more than the M-dwarfs further out; the community has bred their cultivars accordingly over several generations.

There is no industrial sector to speak of. Marib does not manufacture what it cannot fabricate locally from agricultural byproducts and recycled material. Replacement parts for equipment that fails come in via the gates, slowly, at frontier freight rates. The community plans for long delays and keeps older equipment running through maintenance cultures that inner-reach technicians would find eccentric but effective.

The supply line to Sawad is the system's one real dependency. Not for food — food they have. For the fabricated components, medical supplies, and communication relay maintenance that require industrial capacity they cannot replicate locally. This dependency is manageable at present. The community has maintained contingency stores calibrated for disruptions of up to three years, a practice established in the first century of settlement that has never had to be tested at full duration.

The Lattice Commission has a presence at Marib only in the formal sense: a filed registration, a regulatory schedule, a nominal compliance record. No Commission personnel are resident. The community interacts with Commission oversight at its own pace, which is slow, and through the filing systems rather than through any personal relationship with Commission agents. This is not defiance. It is geography and the practical reality that nothing here rises to the level of Commission operational interest.

The Guardians of Autonomy have no formal chapter, but the community's institutional reflexes align closely with Guardian values without anyone having organized them that way. Deep frontier agricultural communities with minimal institutional contact tend to develop similar attitudes independently. Marib is self-reliant, wary of external mandates, and has strong informal mechanisms for community cohesion that serve many of the same functions formal organizations serve elsewhere.
