Review fixes for the #1019 heritage rebalance: - Marib's farm world Ghouta -> Ghawr (Miri): "Ghouta" carries strong modern associations (2013 Damascus attack); Ghawr (the Jordan Rift Valley, an irrigated lowland farming region) keeps the water-fed- drylands sense without the resonance. - Add dominant_faction = "independent" to GJ 914A / 508A / 1245B (Hoshe) — all five rebalanced systems are self-governing independent communities; uniform with siblings GJ 722 / 680 and clears V-FAC-01. - catalog.md: fill GJ 914A -> Marib and GJ 722 -> Sığınak (Hoshe) — the two anchor systems still showed em-dash placeholders. - Marib gttr: name the second aperture neighbour Sığınak instead of the bare "GJ 722" (Miri). Pre-existing Golestan aperture/spur wording (reviewers split on whether it is even wrong) is left for a separate content pass — not introduced by this rename. THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — MARIB
MARIB takes its name from an ancient Earth city whose people built a great dam and made a dry land feed a civilization for a thousand years. The founding families — Arab-heritage farmers who came three hundred years ago to work a world with little water and a great deal of patience — chose the name knowing exactly what they were promising themselves.
The Work
Wave-3 settlement, hop 8, K-type primary in the Cairn pocket's deep north corridor. Three centuries of worked soil, adapted crop varieties, and catchment and channel irrigation built in the first century and maintained since — drawing on a dryland-farming inheritance the founders carried from arid Earth latitudes, where coaxing grain from thin water was already an old and exact art. Marib feeds itself and exports a modest grain and legume surplus back toward Sawad and the inner corridor. The K-type star provides less light than Earth-standard and more than the M-dwarfs further out, and the community has been adapting cultivars to that specific condition across multiple generations with the patience that multi-generational agricultural work allows and requires.
There is no industrial sector. Equipment that fails is repaired by maintenance cultures that inner-reach technicians would find eccentric and that work. Replacement parts come in through the gates slowly, at frontier freight rates, and the community plans for long delays. Contingency stores against multi-year supply disruption have been maintained since the founding cohort as a rational response to frontier isolation that has since become a community discipline: replenished, rotated, inventoried by every family, taught to children as a basic obligation. The number has never been shared with outside parties. The community does not volunteer it.
Not Defiance
The Lattice Commission has a filed registration and a nominal compliance record. No Commission personnel are resident. This is not defiance; it is geography and the practical reality that nothing at Marib rises to the level of Commission operational interest. The community's institutional reflexes align with Guardian values without anyone having organized them that way — deep frontier agricultural communities with minimal institutional contact tend to develop similar attitudes independently, because the attitudes are a rational response to the structural situation.
The Contingency
Three hundred years of preparation, never fully tested. The specific scale of Marib's reserves is the community's private knowledge, and the community treats it as such with the quiet satisfaction of people who solved a problem three hundred years ago and have not needed outside help since. The reserves are not a secret in any dramatic sense. They are simply not a subject that gets raised with outside visitors, because the raising would require explaining the number, and explaining the number would invite opinions about the number, and the community does not need outside opinions about whether its preparedness for the gates going dark is proportionate.
Practical Information
Marib is eight hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Sawad and Sığınak. Agricultural surplus is available. Communication relay infrastructure receives significant maintenance attention. The community is hospitable to visitors who come with a purpose and brief with those who don't.
