GJ 434 is an empty spur off Taishan (GJ 682) — two apertures, one connecting back toward Taishan, one reaching out toward GJ 117 beyond. The star is a variable M-dwarf with periodic activity cycles that produce significant flare activity. Surveys flagged this as a complicating factor for surface settlement — radiation exposure during flare events requires shielding infrastructure that raises costs and extends timelines.
Nobody has yet decided the system is worth that investment. Taishan is an established junction that handles significant east_reach traffic, and GJ 434 sits off its shoulder like an afterthought — a spur that goes nowhere permanently inhabited. The gate infrastructure exists because the survey program extended it as a matter of procedure; the route through GJ 117 was part of a corridor mapping pass that never prompted settlement activity.
The system sees occasional transit — scientific vessels, survey runs, traffic moving between GJ 117 and Taishan that chooses this routing over alternatives. It is not heavily traveled.
