Lichtung means "clearing" in German — the gap in the forest where the light gets through. The name was chosen with some deliberateness by settlers who arrived forty to a hundred years ago at the end of a long corridor of dim M-dwarf systems, found a bright F-type primary waiting for them, and felt the contrast viscerally. After Hansestadt and Marktfeld behind it, Lichtung burns noticeably different. The light here is white and sharp. Shadows have edges.
The habitable world sits in the inner zone of the F-type's broad luminosity band — warm, well-lit, with a strong UV environment that shapes what grows there and how people build. Early settlement architecture oriented around UV management: covered walkways, tinted glazing, vegetation canopies that filter rather than block. The community that evolved from those early choices has an outdoor culture defined by relationship with the star rather than avoidance of it.
As a wave_5 dead_end, Lichtung is new enough that its institutions are still forming. The settlement charter is a generation old. The first generation of locally-born adults is just entering civic life, and they have opinions about how things should work that differ from the founders in some cases and reinforce them in others. The founding German-heritage cultural tradition persists — language, naming conventions, community calendar — but it is being renegotiated by people who have never seen any other home.
Access is through Marktfeld, one gate, one direction. What comes here was sent here. What leaves was meant to go. The community is small enough that these facts are personal.
Supply Dependency
Lichtung depends on Marktfeld for manufactured goods, medical hardware, and technical components. It is not yet producing significant surplus for export — agricultural output covers local needs, and early industrial capacity is directed toward self-sufficiency rather than trade. The economic relationship with Marktfeld is developmental: a young community that needs the connection to survive.
Faction Notes
No external faction presence. A founding council runs civic affairs. The Commission issued the settlement charter and has a vessel stop annually. The stop is social as much as administrative.
Silence Topic
The terms of the settlement charter's land allocation clauses, which the founding council negotiated with a Marktfeld-based commercial interest before the Commission was formally involved. Several allotments in the most productive UV-sheltered agricultural zone were pre-committed before public settlement began.
Narrative Hook
The founding council recently passed an internal resolution — not yet transmitted to the Commission or to Marktfeld — declaring one of the pre-committed land allotments abandoned and opening it for local redistribution. The commercial interest that holds the original claim does not yet know.
Calibration Note
Wave_5 dead_end at hop 7 with an F-type primary is the defining characteristic — bright star at the corridor's end, accessible only through a commercial waypoint. The naming reflects genuine contrast with the dimmer corridor behind it.
