The name was chosen three hundred years ago and it was accurate then: this was the last port, the terminal point, the place where the route ran out. For most of Puerto Último's history, the settlement sat at the end of a chain that connected it inward through a sequence of systems with no hub — no junction, no place where multiple routes converged — just a series of single-aperture connections reaching back toward the denser Reach. In that topology, Puerto Último was genuinely last: the furthest point from the core in its particular spur, the place beyond which there was nothing.

That changed approximately forty years ago when GJ 393 — the system one hop inward from Puerto Último — established its wave_5 settlement and began operating as a hub. Encrucijada has five apertures. One of those apertures connects to GJ 197. Puerto Último, which spent two hundred and sixty years as a terminal dead-end in a quiet chain, is now one hop from a hub with connections to four other systems. The route structure around the community has changed more in the last forty years than in the previous two hundred and sixty combined.

The community is adjusting.

The G0V star at 41.2 light-years is near the warm end of the G-type sequence, providing good surface conditions on the primary inhabited world — agricultural capacity, adequate luminosity, a biosphere that responded well to the founding generation's introductions — the native life shares Earth's chirality closely enough to be edible in its own right, though three centuries of farming have leaned on the introduced cultivars the community knew and trusted. Three hundred years of Spanish-heritage settlement have produced a self-sufficient agricultural community with a specific cultural texture: the names are Spanish, the social structures are Spanish-influenced, the food and the music and the way the community marks its annual cycles reflect three hundred years of a heritage that was brought here deliberately and maintained deliberately. The isolation of the first two and a half centuries was not experienced as deprivation. It was experienced as the condition under which Puerto Último became fully itself.

The arrival of Encrucijada as a hub has introduced something the community has not had before: regular through-traffic. The council chose expansion, and the expansion is ongoing, and the commercial opportunities the expansion has created are real but are also introducing a pace of change that the community's older residents find uncomfortable.

The comfort and discomfort are not evenly distributed. The families with commercial interests near the gate approach have prospered from the increased traffic. The families whose livelihood is agricultural and whose daily lives are remote from the gate infrastructure have not prospered more than before, and they have watched their community change in ways they did not elect. The council's most contested recent votes have been about the pace and character of the docking expansion. The community is not in conflict, but it is in the process of discovering whether the identity it maintained through two hundred and sixty years of quiet isolation can be maintained through forty years of becoming connected.

Puerto Último's agricultural output is the economic foundation. The G0V star's generous conditions support productive farming, and three centuries of development have produced a food system that supplies the local population comfortably and generates a modest export surplus. The export surplus was historically small — there was limited inbound transit to consolidate with for efficient outward freight — but the Encrucijada hub connection has improved outbound logistics enough that the agricultural export volume has increased materially in the last thirty years. The expanded docking infrastructure has also enabled logistics services for the Encrucijada-bound transit traffic, which is a new revenue line that did not exist before the hub was established. Imports are manufactured goods and technical equipment; the import balance has increased with the community's development investment in the docking infrastructure.

The council is elected on a four-year cycle and its membership has historically reflected the agricultural families' demographic majority. The commercial interests concentrated near the gate approach have been underrepresented on the council relative to their recent economic contribution, and there is a formal proposal before the current council to adjust representation weighting. The proposal has been under discussion for three years.

The Lattice Commission's relationship with Puerto Último has changed since Encrucijada was established. The increased transit volume brought Puerto Último's compliance profile to the attention of Commission logistics analysts in a way that the previous minimal-transit years had not, and the Commission's south_reach regional office has upgraded Puerto Último from the extended-cycle inspection schedule to a standard annual visit. The community's compliance record has been adequate at each annual visit; the transition from extended-cycle to annual inspection is itself experienced by some community members as a consequence of the connectivity they did not entirely choose.

Three hundred years of near-complete isolation produced a community that handled its own internal disputes through its own internal processes, and the records of those processes are in the community archive rather than in any Commission or Assembly filing. Several of the disputes involve land allocation decisions from the first two centuries that the founding-wave descendants consider settled and the later-wave settlers' descendants consider settled in ways that disadvantaged their predecessors. The disputes are not currently active. The records that could revive them are in the archive, and the archive is accessible to community members but has not been reviewed by any external party.

A commercial freighter captain who has been running the Puerto Último to Encrucijada route since shortly after the hub opened has recently told the community council that a competitor has begun offering the same route at rates that are commercially impossible to sustain without either a loss-bearing subsidy or access to cargo documentation arrangements that lower the effective cost below the declared rate — and she has a specific theory about which category her competitor falls into, and the theory involves the cargo consolidation infrastructure at Encrucijada that the Commission's understaffed field office has been waiting eight months to audit.

The K-type header designation versus the G0V stellar profile is a generation artifact; G0V governs all lore detail. G0V at 41.2 light-years is at the far end of the south_reach's populated range and requires explanation for wave_3 settlement: the founding families likely arrived through a different intermediate topology than the current Encrucijada hub connection, using junction systems in the pre-wave_3 network that have since been bypassed or supplemented. Dead_end at hop 8 with a wave_3 settlement date is the configuration that creates the narrative interest: long isolation followed by abrupt connection, which is the condition Puerto Último is currently navigating.
