Forty years is not long enough to know whether a community will hold. Ashworth Junction is still finding out.
Petra Ashworth led the survey team that identified this M-type star's unusual position — three viable aperture alignments, a junction geometry that had no comparable settled system within several hops. She filed the survey report with New Ballarat's transit authority, recommended immediate development, and was named in the founding charter. What followed was rapid by frontier standards and chaotic by any other measure: transit infrastructure first, then a construction workforce that became a permanent population faster than anyone planned, then an improvised governance structure that is still being negotiated.
The star is an M4.5Ve — an active red dwarf with flare emission, 16.7 light-years out. No habitable world here; settlement is platform-based, station-built on the same model as Wolf 359. What Ashworth Junction has is three gates and the potential to become a routing node for everything that moves between New Ballarat and the outer systems that GJ 1116A and GJ 402 might eventually connect. Whether that potential will be realized depends on whether those outer systems develop. Whether those systems develop depends, in part, on whether Ashworth Junction becomes reliable enough to route through. The interdependencies are not yet resolved.
At hop 5 and Wave 5, the Assembly's presence is institutional but thin. A transit authority representative manages aperture scheduling. An administrative registrar handles the founding charter compliance. There is no enforcement presence; Wolf 359 is responsible for any enforcement requirement that exceeds what the local community can handle, and Wolf 359 is several hops away. In practice, Ashworth Junction manages its own disputes through mechanisms that have been invented within living memory, tested infrequently, and not fully proven.
The community's cultural character is still being negotiated in the literal sense — there are English-heritage settlers who came with the original Ashworth survey, construction workers from a dozen different backgrounds who stayed when the contract ended, a few families who followed the gateway survey from New Ballarat with longer-term intentions, and new arrivals who are still arriving. The English founder heritage that named the system is visible in the formal documentation and in Ashworth family members who hold positions in the transit authority. Whether it will remain the dominant cultural thread as the population grows is an open question.
The three-gate junction is the system's entire identity and its entire risk. If the outer routes develop, Ashworth Junction becomes significant. If they stall, it remains a young and relatively isolated community supporting transit infrastructure for traffic that has not yet materialized.
Supply Dependency
All consumables and equipment inbound from New Ballarat (GJ 667A). The junction generates transit fee revenue but does not produce goods locally. The community is entirely dependent on the supply chain from New Ballarat; disruption to that connection would be immediately critical.
Faction Notes
The Ashworth Junction Transit Authority is the most institutionally developed actor in the system — it was established before the civilian community and has clearer legal standing than the improvisational community council that has evolved alongside it. Petra Ashworth is no longer present; she returned to New Ballarat within a decade of founding. Her family members who remained hold several positions in the Transit Authority. The community council represents the broader civilian population but has less formal authority than the Transit Authority over most decisions that matter. The relationship between the two bodies is the central political tension in the system.
Silence Topic
The actual traffic projections for the outer apertures — toward GJ 1116A and GJ 402 — were submitted to New Ballarat's transit authority as part of the development justification. Those projections were optimistic. Whether the current traffic volumes are meeting those projections, or whether they are substantially below them, is not publicly reported. The Transit Authority's position is that the junction is within the development timeline's normal variance.

Narrative Hook
The construction worker who built the third aperture's control systems — a contractor who refused to leave when the contract ended — has been running informal calculations suggesting that one of the outer aperture alignments is not stable in the way the survey claimed, and has been trying for two years to get someone at New Ballarat to look at the numbers.
Calibration Note
Wave_5 junction at hop 5 is intentionally the most frontier-edge system in this batch. The M4.5Ve classification (active red dwarf with emission) is consistent with flare-star prevalence in the outer north reach. The three-aperture junction topology at such early settlement creates productive tension: the infrastructure is there, the community is not yet established enough to operate it with confidence. The 'Ve' emission suffix mirrors UV Ceti and Okoro's Claim — flare activity is a north reach characteristic.
The inner rocky body Lavenille — a district of Port of Spain, Trinidad, historically home to Afro-Caribbean communities of the city's eastern hills — was named by the construction workforce before Petra Ashworth's formal survey party had finalized the system's place-name register. A significant fraction of the initial build crew came from Caribbean Commonwealth communities, and several hundred stayed after their contracts ended. Lavenille was already in use in the shift logs and common speech by the time the Transit Authority was constituted; it went into the official record because changing it would have required a formal process that no one prioritized. The Crick transit station took its name later, from the broader English-heritage vocabulary of the Ashworth documentation. Lavenille predates it.
