20 changes across 18 systems implementing the approved remediation plan
from the cultural diversity audit (docs/design/cultural-diversity-audit.md).

DB changes (15 bodies/stations in systems.db):

# Cultural Diversity Audit & Remediation Plan

## Executive Summary
The Settled Reach's 301 systems distribute across six corridors. The overall cultural picture is rich and grounded, with strong corridor differentiation. However, three significant gaps require remediation:
1. **East_reach is missing its Southeast Asian depth.** Indonesian/Malay has 34 systems, Thai has zero, Cambodian/Khmer has zero. The corridor promises these cultures explicitly (D-167) and they are nowhere.
2. **West_reach's Russian/Eastern European stream is nearly absent.** Only one system (Novaya Zarya, which is actually in east_reach as an exception) carries Russian heritage. Ukrainian, Baltic, and Central Asian are entirely absent.
3. **North_reach underrepresents Nigeria and the Caribbean.** Many north_reach names are English-language rather than specifically British (see §3.1 reassessment); the genuine British dominance concern is narrower than first counted. But Nigerian presence (one system) and Caribbean presence (zero systems) remain gaps regardless of how British heritage is read.
Beyond these three critical gaps, the audit finds:
- A naming convention for great scientists and pioneers that is documented but barely used (7 systems)
- Non-culture exodus groups present but unevenly distributed and underdocumented
- Portuguese is justifiably dominant in south_reach and the prevalence logic is sound
- German/Scandinavian domination of west_reach is justified and appropriately varied
- Core and deep_frontier are well-balanced
**Recommended changes:** 20 specific from→to suggestions (see §8). No horizon station renames — horizon names are fixed for player recognition. All changes are either DB_ONLY (body/non-horizon station names in systems.db) or WIKI_REWRITE (calibration note additions). No corridor reassignments needed. Conservative: existing systems with cultural identity are not touched.

Three data sources were used and cross-referenced:

## 3. Cultural Analysis by Corridor
### 3.1 North_reach (55 systems)
**Intended:** British Commonwealth diaspora — British, Australian, Canadian, South African, Indian, Nigerian, with post-British hybrid identity as the binding logic.

**Assessment:**
The apparent British dominance needs a calibration. This game is written in English, so English-language descriptive names (Whitmore, Thornfield, Crick) should **not** be read as British cultural markers — they are neutral settler names that could belong to any English-speaking Commonwealth community. Separating genuinely British-specific UK place-names (~1518 systems with Scottish/Welsh/English regional toponyms) from generic English-language names (~1215 systems), British representation drops to the 2733% range — high but not pathological for the anchor culture of the corridor.
Australian representation is good. Canadian is thin but plausible. Indian is present at 57 systems; note that **Indian presence is valid in both north_reach (Commonwealth logic) and east_reach (South Asian geographic corridor logic)** — do not treat east_reach Indian exceptions as culturally misplaced.
**Nigerian representation is critically thin** for reasons that hold regardless of how British is counted. Nigeria is the most populous Commonwealth nation and has a rich cultural voice (Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa/Fulani). One system explicitly anchored (GJ-1245A with Igbo body/station names and surname) is insufficient — and even that system's calibration note does not acknowledge the heritage.
**Caribbean is absent.** Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad/Tobago, Guyana — all Commonwealth nations with strong diaspora networks — have no presence anywhere in the 301 systems.

**Assessment:**
South_reach is the **most internally coherent** corridor. The Portuguese/Iberian dominance is justified (see §8 Prevalence Justification) and has good variety across Iberian Portuguese, Brazilian, and Lusophone African strands. Spanish/Latin American is well-placed. Southern African representation spans both Afrikaans-derived and Nguni-language traditions.
**Minor gap:** Chilean/Andean Spanish voice is underrepresented — most Spanish names feel Castilian/peninsular or generic Latin American. Andean, Mapuche, and Southern Cone cultural inflections are absent.
**Minor gap:** Congolese/Central African naming is absent (given DSMC's heavy mining presence in south_reach, Congolese/DRC cultural heritage in mining communities is historically plausible).

**Assessment:**
The four major East Asian cultures (Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese) are **well-balanced and each has credible depth** at roughly 817 systems each. Vietnamese is notably strong relative to its lower global population — this reflects strong cultural specificity and a clear gate-path logic.
**Critical gap: Indonesian/Malay.** D-167 lists this explicitly as a corridor culture. Indonesia has the 4th largest population on Earth, the largest Muslim-majority nation, and Malay is spoken across Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and Singapore. Only 34 systems carry this heritage. This is the single largest underrepresentation gap in the entire 301.
**Critical gap: Thai.** Zero systems carry Thai cultural identity. Thailand is one of Southeast Asia's dominant cultures (with a unique script, distinct religious tradition, strong regional culinary and artistic tradition) and is completely absent.
**Critical gap: Cambodian/Khmer.** Zero systems. Khmer heritage (Angkor Wat civilization, contemporary Cambodia) would provide a distinctively different voice from Vietnamese or Thai.
**Note on Indian in east_reach:** South Asian exceptions here (Bengali, Sikh) are geographically plausible — Indian Ocean trade routes and South Asian tech/engineering communities had east_reach gate-path presence. These are valid exceptions, not misplaced north_reach content. Indian total volume across both corridors (~810 systems) is acceptable.

German industrial vocabulary is **pervasive and well-differentiated** — covering both place-name transplants (Jena, Goslar, Arnsberg) and descriptive industrial German (Steinwerk, Leuchtturm, Knotenpunkt, Walzwerk). This is appropriate and internally consistent. Scandinavian coverage is strong across all four Nordic languages/traditions.
**Critical gap: Russian.** The `cultural-migration-pressure.md` explicitly lists "Russian Federation successor states" as part of the west_reach secondary stream. Zero west_reach systems carry Russian heritage. Novaya Zarya (GJ-137) has Russian heritage but is assigned to east_reach as a deliberate exception. The inner west_reach should have at least 35 systems with Russian, Ukrainian, or related Slavic heritage.

The Arabic/Persian/Turkish absence is worth noting separately: these are among Earth's largest language/culture groups and are completely absent from the Reach. The migration-pressure document's focus on the four Commonwealth/Iberian/East Asian/Germanic streams does not preclude exceptions — these cultures should appear at least in the deep_frontier and core as "early arrival" or "idealist colony" exceptions.

## 5. Non-Culture Exodus Groups
These are communities whose founding identity is **not traceable to an Earth cultural heritage** — defined instead by ideology, institutional affiliation, historical rupture, or shared non-cultural experience.
### 5.1 Quilombo Communities
**Systems identified:** GJ-423B, GJ-473A, GJ-67 (and related systems)
Quilombos are self-governing African-descended communities in the Brazilian tradition — founded by escaped enslaved people and their descendants, existing in perpetual tension with surrounding society. In the Reach context, a quilombo colony's founding identity is **resistance** (specifically: departure from a system that exploited them) rather than any living Earth culture. Three to four south_reach/deep_frontier systems carry this explicitly; more may carry it implicitly under the "refugee colony" exception archetype.
**Design note:** Quilombo communities have the highest cultural_persistence scores in the corpus — resistance origin communities hold tightly to heritage. In the Reach, this means a quilombo system founded 200 years ago by people fleeing a DSMC extraction operation may have more coherent internal culture than surrounding corridor systems.
### 5.2 Idealist / Utopian Colonies
**Systems identified (9):** GJ-183, GJ-282A, GJ-473A, GJ-616, GJ-770, GJ-421B (governance-charter-first), GJ-684A (cooperative-charter explicitly modeled on west_reach structures but not by heritage)
These systems were founded on philosophical or governance principles rather than cultural heritage. Their founding ideology may be:
- Egalitarian (common ownership, cooperative governance by charter)
- Religious (covenant community, defined theological practice)
- Separatist (explicit rejection of corridor norms)
GJ-684A is an interesting case: its founding charter is explicitly modeled on west_reach cooperative structures, but the founders' own heritage is not west_reach. The institutional form outlived the cultural origin.
### 5.3 Religious Communities
**Systems identified (11):** GJ-1248, GJ-127B, GJ-204, GJ-3333, GJ-541, and others
Religious motivation as a primary exodus trigger. The Reach's founding ethic was assimilationist (the Assembly actively discouraged monoculture colonies), which means overt religious settlements required some degree of subterfuge or late-wave frontier positioning. Most religious communities in the corpus are outer-reach/deep-frontier, which tracks.
### 5.4 Guild / Institutional Lineage Communities
**Systems identified:** GJ-54.1 (Transit Guild of Ribeiro's Star — oldest continuously operating freight guild in south_reach)
Some systems derive their primary identity not from cultural heritage or ideology but from an institutional lineage. The Transit Guild at GJ-54.1 is effectively a **governing institutional culture** that has outlasted the founding cultural generation by many waves. People born into this system identify as guild members before identifying as any Earth-culture heritage.
### 5.5 Gate Corporation Technical Culture
Detected through implication rather than explicit mention. Gate Corporation operational bases are present in every junction and hub system at hops 37. The Gate Corp maintains a cosmopolitan rotating staff from across the Reach — these are systems where the largest single population group is culturally "from everywhere" by institutional design. This is not a heritage — it is an **institutional identity** that actively resists heritage accumulation.
### 5.6 Perpetual-Class Networks
Not present as explicit community identities in the wiki corpus, but structurally implied: Perpetual-class individuals across the Reach share an experiential identity (centuries of lived memory, cultural drift from surrounding generations) that may be more binding than any Earth heritage. Their appearance in several systems as Perpetual Founder Stamp archetypes implies that over time, a system's cultural identity can become **one person's personal history rendered architectural**.
### 5.7 The Compact of Westphalia (Political Identity Override)
3040 west_reach and deep_frontier systems have Compact membership (factions/compact-of-westphalia.md). For these systems, political identity — specifically the rejection of Assembly authority — is the dominant self-definition that overrides or recontextualizes cultural heritage. A German-heritage mining system in the Compact does not primarily think of itself as German — it thinks of itself as a Compact member, and its cultural heritage is the archaeological layer underneath.
