Supply Dependency

Enugu is the north_reach's outer industrial hub: mineral processing, transit-grade component manufacturing, and the commercial infrastructure that a junction system at this hop distance requires to be functional. The mineral deposits on the system's second body were the reason the founding families came here — a wave_3 extraction contract, negotiated by a consortium of Nigerian-heritage industrial investors who already operated processing operations in two inner systems and recognized the deposit survey data when they read it. The processing capacity they built is still running. Their great-grandchildren operate it.

The junction topology makes Enugu a regional commercial center in a way that its individual industries do not fully explain. Three gates mean three adjacent systems' worth of supply and demand routing through this station. The transit fee revenue compounds. The commercial district around the horizon station is substantially larger than the population alone would support. Enugu has the outer north_reach's only significant credit market, which creates a dependency relationship with the spur-end systems on either side: Carnarvon and Ratnagiri both settle their interstellar accounts through Enugu.

Faction Notes

The founding families — the Okonkwo, Eze, and Nwachukwu surnames appear in every major commercial enterprise — have not departed in six generations. They hold the processing contracts, sit on the commercial registry board, and constitute the majority on the local parliament's economic committee. The Igbo-heritage governance culture they brought with it: community deliberation that looks informal but encodes deep precedent, strong emphasis on earned standing through demonstrated contribution, and a deep-seated suspicion of institutions that claim authority without local legitimacy. The Assembly's outpost here is tiny and consulted mainly on interstellar filing requirements. The actual governance is local.

Gate Corporation's rotating maintenance crew is present but unobtrusive. No Syndic holds a significant stake in Enugu's processing operations — the founding families bought out the original contracting entity three generations ago, and no outside buyer has successfully acquired a controlling interest since. Several have tried.

Silence Topic

The mineral extraction consortium's original contracts included a production-sharing arrangement with an inner-system investment group that no longer exists as a named entity but whose successor interests have never been clearly documented. The processing operations pay a royalty line item to a holding account whose beneficial owner is not listed on any public registry accessible from Enugu. The payments are modest enough — about two percent of gross processing revenue — that no local council has made eliminating them a priority. Two percent of gross processing revenue, compounded over six generations, is not a modest sum from the recipient's perspective.

Narrative Hook

The junction's commercial registry has recorded every interstellar transaction through Enugu for three hundred years; what it has not recorded, and what the founding families' institutional memory knows better than to discuss openly, is that the registry has a second ledger.

Calibration Note

wave_3 junction at hop_distance: 7 with extractive-industrial founding fits the Early Arrival exception archetype cleanly. Nigerian-heritage founding families followed a specific economic opportunity into a Commonwealth-dominant corridor — the mineral contract is the historical explanation, not cultural affinity. The K0V stellar class provides a more Earth-comparable light environment than the M-dwarfs typical of inner north_reach systems, which the founding families noted in their original settlement documentation as a positive factor. Four hundred years of unbroken family control of the primary industry has produced a system where economic and political power are effectively identical.

The naming is explicitly Igbo cartography: Enugu (the system's name) is the capital city of Enugu State, Nigeria; Onitsha (the primary inhabited world) is the major Igbo trading city on the Niger River, historically one of the largest markets in West Africa; Nnewi and Awka are both Anambra State towns; Oguta is an Imo State town associated with the Oguta Lake — all deliberate place-names from the same Igbo cultural geography. GJ 75 is the second confirmed Nigerian-heritage north_reach system (alongside GJ 1245A / Okoro's Claim), with Onitsha serving as the most prominent named world in this cultural stream.
