THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — NOVA ESTRADA

NOVA ESTRADA means "new road," and the wave-5 settlers who arrived thirty years ago chose the name with the confidence of people young enough to believe that naming a road and building one are more or less the same task.

Why No One Came Before

A G0V primary at hop 18 had been in the survey data for centuries. Solar-type light, warm and bright, a habitable world with thick atmosphere, surface water, and a native ecology that is present but not aggressively competitive. The conditions were known. Nobody came.

The corridor through Claraboia and GJ 726 did not exist as a functional supply route until the wave-4 systems established themselves. Once Kettenschmied was forging components at hop 15 and Claraboia was producing ecological data at hop 16, the route through GJ 726 to GJ 672 became viable in the specific sense that matters: a founding cohort with modest capital could reach hop 18 with a reasonable expectation of receiving supply within two years of arrival. This is not a generous margin. Twenty-eight families decided it was sufficient.

What Thirty Years Costs

The population is approximately 200 people, including 47 children born on-world — the first generation whose relationship to the Reach's institutions is purely theoretical, because the institutions have not reached them and show no sign of trying. These children have never seen a dim K-dwarf. They find the concept difficult to imagine. They have also never seen a fully stocked medical facility, a market with more than two vendors, or anyone arriving on a ship who came specifically to stay.

Supply intervals average fourteen to eighteen months. This duration shapes the community's psychology in ways that are visible once you know to look: everything purchased is evaluated for shelf life, everything broken is repaired until it cannot be, everything imported is treated as a finite resource that will not be easily replaced. The 47 children grew up doing this arithmetic before they could articulate why. It is the first language of a wave-5 settlement at this distance, and Nova Estrada speaks it fluently.

Temporary structures are being replaced by permanent ones. Agricultural plots are in the first and second amendment cycles. The community is becoming something — it is just not finished being what.

The Founding Agreement

The twenty-eight families signed a founding agreement during the expedition's final transit — drafted in the weeks before arrival, without legal review, because the lawyers were eighteen hops away and the settlement window would not wait. The document specifies land allocation, inheritance terms, subdivision conditions, and the procedures for accommodating families that have arrived or been born into the settlement since.

Several of these clauses are ambiguous. A drifter with any experience in frontier land law will see them on a first reading; copies are available, and the community does not restrict access. The founders know the ambiguities are there. They have raised governance questions in community meetings three times in the past decade — whether to draft a formal charter, whether to appoint a settlement coordinator — and each time the vote was deferred. A community of two hundred people with an infrastructure deficit has more immediate business than its foundational documents, right up until it doesn't.

The crisis is not here yet. It is the kind of crisis that compounds interest.

Auditioning for Infrastructure

The through-route gives the community one strategic asset: corridor traffic heading deeper passes through, and that traffic occasionally includes people willing to trade labor or goods for provisions. Nova Estrada is positioning itself as a waypoint — not reliably provisioned enough yet to be a true resupply stop, but present enough that the corridor's sparse traffic has started to factor it into route planning.

This is the specific interval that every young waypoint lives in, between aspiration and recognition. The community is building supply stocks one successful harvest at a time. They are accumulating the inventory and reliability that would, at some point, justify the designation they are working toward. Supply intervals of fourteen to eighteen months mean that building this buffer is slow — every reserve is also the reserve against a missed shipment, and you do not spend your emergency margin on becoming a waypoint. You spend what is left after the emergency margin.

The corridor needs waypoints. Waypoints need time to become reliable. Nova Estrada is in the interval, doing the work of becoming what it named itself.

Practical Information

Nova Estrada is eighteen hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 726 and Entremeio. Basic provisions may be available — agricultural output is developing but not yet consistent enough for scheduled resupply. The G0V primary is genuinely pleasant after the dim K-dwarfs common on the inner portion of this corridor. The children born here consider it normal.
