Supply Dependency
Johannsen's Star feeds processed rare-earth concentrates toward the core (GJ 845) and receives manufactured components and foodstuffs in return. The subgiant's expanded envelope burned away surface volatiles from the inner orbital bodies millennia ago, leaving behind unusually dense lithophile deposits that Wave 3 prospectors found commercially viable. GJ 3622 (outer reach) sends raw ore inbound; Johannsen's Star has the refinery capacity to upgrade it. Uusi Vantaa (GJ 1230A) feeds transit volume through the loop without significant commodity exchange.
Faction Notes
The system takes its name from Sigrid Johannsen, the Norwegian-heritage expedition geologist whose survey work established the subgiant's unusual mineral profile and triggered the Wave 3 settlement program. Her descendants still hold a board seat on the Johannsen Extraction Consortium, the dominant industrial entity here, which has run the refineries for six generations under a self-renewing charter. This is not unusual in the north_reach, though the Assembly has twice flagged the charter's perpetual-renewal clause as inconsistent with competitive licensing standards; both times the local parliament has voted to retain it.
The Concord Assembly's footprint is modest for a hop-3 system — a compliance officer, a fleet relay, no regional authority. The system's modest economic scale and lack of transit ambition make it a lower priority for Assembly administrative investment than Wolf 359 or New Ballarat.
A small Veil Institute geological research station has operated in the outer orbital zone for approximately eighty years, studying the subgiant's evolutionary trajectory. The researchers are unobtrusive and rarely intersect with local governance.
Silence Topic
The Johannsen Extraction Consortium's charter grants it right of first refusal on any new subsurface development within the system. A recent deep survey by an independent team has identified a secondary ore body beneath the northern shelf of the primary mining moon that the Consortium's own surveys missed — or suppressed. The independent team's lead researcher has not been seen publicly for eleven weeks. The Consortium says she is on extended field assignment in the outer belt.
Narrative Hook
Johannsen's Star's entire economic history rests on one survey report filed by one woman 300 years ago — and her descendants have made sure the system never developed a second opinion.
Calibration Note
K2:III: subgiant classification is genuine and drives the setting's economic logic: old star, unusual mineral profile, no agricultural potential, Wave 3 industrial settlement rather than Wave 1-2 agricultural. The Scandinavian founding heritage (cross-corridor exception from north_reach's Commonwealth dominant) reflects a corporate-origin settlement — the expedition was contracted by a Scandinavian geological consortium, not by Commonwealth administrative migration. The name persisted because the Consortium kept it.
