THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — CROWN'S HOLLOW

CROWN'S HOLLOW is the only place in the Settled Reach where you will be addressed by your correct title, whether or not you have one.

The Institution That Kept Going

The European monarchy purges moved fast. Most royal houses lost everything in the space of a few political seasons — assets nationalized, titles abolished, archives dispersed. The Windsors had money, which meant they had time, which meant they had options. The option they chose was a system charter at hop 3 in the north arc, purchased outright, and populated over the following generations by every dispossessed house from the continent that could afford the fare. The Battenbergs arrived. The Hohenzollern-Sigmaringens arrived. Houses you have never heard of arrived, with their heraldic silver and their portraits and their sense that if the world had made an error, the error could be corrected by going somewhere the world had not yet reached.

The result, two hundred years later, is a court of several hundred and a titled peerage of several thousand, operating under constitutional conventions that are treated as binding law, adjudicated by a chancery whose commercial precedents predate the Concord Assembly by a century. The house that now holds the Crown is called Kiyomi-Battenberg-Windsor, which is the bloodline's way of recording its own history: every family that married in is still there in the name, accumulated rather than replaced. The current Sovereign has ruled for thirty-one years. The institution has ruled for two hundred.

The Commercial Puzzle

Here is a thing about Crown's Hollow that transit operators learn quickly: the port authority operates under Crown charter rather than Commission registration. The paperwork is different. Not obstructive, exactly — the Crown's Bench has been adjudicating commercial disputes for two centuries, and the quality of its rulings is the reason certain freight houses and long-duration futures traders specifically route their disputes here. A ruling from the Crown's Bench is not subject to Assembly review. The commercial precedents are older than most of the disputes they resolve. There is an argument that Crown's Hollow's judicial system is the most reliable commercial arbitration venue in the north arc, and the argument has been winning clients for a hundred years.

The Concord Assembly maintains a formal diplomatic mission here — not an administrative office, but a mission with accredited ambassadorial status. This is the Assembly's solution to a jurisdiction that doesn't fit its taxonomy. Everyone involved understands that the arrangement works because neither side wants to formally test what would happen if it didn't.

The bilateral transit agreement with Kampala Gate, one hop away, has been in place for a hundred and sixty years. It was drafted in language that carefully avoids any implication about which institution is the senior party. Both sides drafted it carefully. The care shows.

What the Chancery Does Not Have

The founding archive contains a notation, approximately one hundred and eighty years old, marking certain documents as "awaiting cataloguing." This notation has not been updated. The documents it describes cover the period immediately before the court's departure from the broader Reach's emerging political order — a departure that was, by any reconstruction, abrupt: expedition charters of that period took years to prepare; Crown's Hollow's was filed and executed in fourteen months. The court's official account describes a principled withdrawal. It does not explain the timing.

The court also maintains a licensed transit route to Cairn — the seven-aperture hub one hop away that has remained entirely unsettled for the entirety of the Reach's history. This route is registered under a category the Commission created specifically to accommodate the request: non-commercial interest access, no settlement intent, indefinite duration. Crown's Hollow describes it as a historical navigational reserve. The Commission has no other examples of this category in use.

The new court archivist, whose first formal act was to request updated access credentials for the sealed records vault, was appointed recently. The chancery has not commented on the appointment.

Practical Information

Crown's Hollow is three hops from Gateway with four gate apertures — a junction connecting to Koskinen's Reach, Kampala Gate, Cairn, and Johannsen's Star. The K5 primary gives the habitable body — Ys, if you know your mythology — long amber afternoons and persistent western rains. The capital was planned with avenues. The central precinct is arranged around the Palace of Continuance, which is the seat of the Crown. It is not a museum. The Gate Corporation's aperture teams address port officials by title. This took about one generation to become standard practice.
