The star is a variable M-dwarf with periodic activity cycles that produce significant flare activity. Surveys flagged this as a complicating factor for surface settlement — radiation exposure during flare events requires shielding infrastructure that raises costs and extends timelines.

Nobody has yet decided the system is worth that investment. Taishan is an established junction that handles significant east_reach traffic, and GJ 434 sits off its shoulder like an afterthought — a spur that goes nowhere permanently inhabited. The gate infrastructure exists because the survey program extended it as a matter of procedure; the route through GJ 117 was part of a corridor mapping pass that never prompted settlement activity.

The second inner planet Banteay (Khmer: 'citadel' — the fortified waystation of Angkor-era settlement practice) was named by a Khmer-heritage survey team working the Taishan spur extensions. The name is a record of passage: the team noted the planet as a potential future waystation given its orbital geometry, applied the word for a fortified stopping point, and continued outward. Nobody has built a citadel here. The name is still on the charts.
