THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ENTREMEIO
ENTREMEIO is Portuguese — it means "between," the interlude, the space that exists between the thing before and the thing after. The wave-4 founders who arrived 160 years ago named their settlement for its position rather than its conditions. They were not naming a home. They were naming a function, and eight generations of their descendants have been performing it faithfully ever since.
The Last Reference Point
Hop 19, through_route. Nova Estrada on one side. Dalim on the other, where the corridor enters territory that does not follow the ordinary logic of settlement. Beyond Dalim: GJ 7547, Abzu, and the corridor's end in a way the Guide no longer sends correspondents to describe in detail.
Entremeio is the last system on this route where a traveler can expect recognizable frontier mechanics — supply chains, trade relationships, agricultural surplus, a council that responds to correspondence. For a traveler heading deeper, it is the last reference point before the logic changes. For a traveler coming back — and the traffic returning from past Dalim thins considerably — it is the first thing that makes sense again. The community provisions both directions without distinction, which is a more deliberate policy than it appears.
What Passes Through and What Doesn't
The travelers heading toward Dalim and Abzu are sparse, purposeful, and rarely talkative about where they are going or why. They come in ones and pairs, occasionally in groups of four or five. They know what provisions to ask for. They do not explain their cargo. They leave on schedule.
The provisioning logs record transactions: water, food, technical components, fuel. Cargo descriptions for outbound travelers are not recorded. This is not an oversight. The municipal council established the no-inspection policy in the settlement's first decade, following an incident that the community does not describe to outsiders. The incident predates every living resident by six generations. What it produced is 160 years of travelers who know that Entremeio provisions without asking — a reputation that travels the corridor in both directions and draws the specific category of traffic that depends on it.
A drifter passing through learns quickly not to ask about the founding incident. Not because the community is hostile — they are genuinely hospitable — but because the quality of the silence that answers the question is itself an answer. Something passed through here in the founding decade. The community learned something from it. The policy is what they learned, and the policy has served them for 160 years.
The Lake and the Almost
The settlement sits on the shore of the largest equatorial lake, where the thin atmosphere's supplemental pressure requirement is eliminated by the microclimate and the adapted agriculture produces consistent yields without the full infrastructure investment the rest of the world demands. The lake is blue-green and still in the mornings. The F9V primary is near-solar — warm enough to feel familiar after the dimmer stars to the inner side, dim enough to remind you that familiar is relative at hop 19.
The place has the quality of somewhere that has been lived in for 160 years by people who have made their peace with what it is. The community is composed, competent, good at what they do. The lakeside settlement is almost pleasant in a way that is rare at this distance — almost comfortable, almost inviting, almost enough to make a traveler consider stopping.
Almost is the operative word. Entremeio's identity is transit. They provision people who are going somewhere. A traveler who decided to stay would be — to the community's experienced eye — someone who had decided not to arrive wherever they were going, and at hop 19, that distinction carries a particular weight. The community would welcome such a person. They would also, without saying so, understand what staying here instead of continuing means.
The Council's Practicalities
The municipal council operates with four-year elected terms — more formally structured than most deep frontier governance, a legacy of the founding cohort's south_reach democratic tradition. Community affairs are managed with quiet competence. The Assembly's annual assessments are unpaid. The council's recorded position is that the Assembly's jurisdiction is theoretical at hop 19 and the lake's irrigation infrastructure needs the resources more than the Assembly needs the compliance.
This has been the council's recorded position for approximately a century. The Assembly's enforcement presence at hop 19 arrives, when it arrives, as correspondence. The council files it and continues with the irrigation.
Practical Information
Entremeio is nineteen hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Nova Estrada and Dalim. Provisioning services are available and reliable. The lakeside location makes this one of the more comfortable waypoints on the deep corridor. Visitors heading deeper are provisioned and not questioned. Visitors returning from deeper are also provisioned and not questioned, which serves a different function — and the community knows it.
