Sova Station Works

Type: Corporation — Habitat Module Fabrication and Station Construction Also Known As: Sova Works, SSW Status: Canonical Scope: Regional — inner core and mid-reach; specialist habitat fabrication reach-wide Headquarters: Sova (GJ 280B) — inner core system, Slavic-heritage settlement Classification: Station construction specialist; producer behavioral archetype

Overview

"Sova" means owl in the old Slavic languages that the founding community brought from Earth. The founders chose it for the same reason that people name things after owls: it implies watchfulness, precision, and the patience to wait for the right moment to act. Station construction — building the pressurized, life-supported environments in which people can live and work in space — requires all three.

Sova Station Works has been fabricating habitat modules for the inner core's station expansion projects for three generations. The modular construction philosophy that SSW refined — standard connecting interfaces, scalable pressure volumes, and pre-integrated utility routing — has become the de facto construction standard for inner core station expansion and has been adopted by the Commission as a reference specification for habitat module certification.

Origin

The founding generation at GJ 280B included Slavic-heritage construction engineers who had worked on station expansion projects in the inner core before deciding to establish a fabrication operation rather than continuing as itinerant contractors. The logic was vertical integration: the bottleneck in station construction was not engineering talent but fabrication capacity — the physical production of modules that met Commission specifications at the quality and cost that station expansion projects required.

Sova Works' first decade focused on the inner core market, where station expansion demand was consistent enough to keep a fabrication operation viable. The modular connection standard that SSW developed in this period — the pressure-seal interface that became the Compact-Class Habitat standard — was submitted to the Commission as a proposed certification specification and adopted, which meant that every station builder using the standard generated documentation that referenced SSW's specification. The reputational benefit of having authored the standard exceeded the revenue from the specification licensing fee, which SSW had offered at nominal cost specifically to encourage adoption.

Operations

Standard module fabrication: SSW produces the habitat modules that make up most inner core and mid-reach station expansion: residential blocks, commercial district sections, utility and life-support infrastructure, and docking expansion modules. The standard module catalog is available for direct purchase; custom specifications are quoted on project basis.

SSW Pressurized Section: The brand name for SSW's standard residential module — the most widely installed habitat block type in inner core stations. The "Pressurized Section" designation reflects the Commission's certification language rather than any particular marketing choice, but the name has been in use long enough to carry its own weight.

Compact-Class Habitat: SSW's small-format module line, designed for systems that need to expand habitat capacity without the infrastructure investment that full-scale module installation requires. The Compact-Class is specifically designed for installation at outer reach stations with limited lift capacity and construction support.

Political Relationships

Gate Corporation: Every gate installation includes a horizon station, and horizon stations require habitation modules. Gate Corporation has been an SSW customer for two generations — the specific module configurations for Gate Corp's horizon station template were developed in collaboration with SSW's engineering team and are SSW proprietary specifications manufactured exclusively by SSW under a Gate Corp contract.

Stalownia Kowalski: The heavy equipment that constructs station modules — the fabrication machinery inside SSW's own manufacturing facility — is Stalownia equipment. The two companies have a buyer-supplier relationship that creates interdependency: SSW's production capacity depends on Stalownia's equipment supply, and Stalownia values SSW as a customer whose equipment requirements are consistent and technically demanding.

The Veil Institute: The Institute's horizon stations include some of the most technically complex inhabited structures in the Reach. SSW has fabricated specialized modules for Institute installations on three occasions. The specifications involved were not published in any technical record. SSW's engineering files contain sealed project documentation that the contract with the Institute required the company to maintain but not disclose. The project leads who worked on those contracts are all still employed by SSW.

What They Don't Talk About

The construction defect settlement.

Forty years ago, a residential module SSW fabricated for a station expansion project in the mid-reach failed a pressure seal at a secondary bulkhead interface twelve years after installation. The failure was non-catastrophic — the pressure loss was detected by the station's monitoring system before it became dangerous, and the affected section was evacuated and repaired without injury. The investigation traced the failure to a fabrication defect in the pressure seal that was within SSW's manufacturing tolerance at the time but that SSW's subsequent specification review identified as inadequate for long-term performance.

SSW and the station's operating authority negotiated a settlement that included a non-disclosure clause. SSW revised its manufacturing specifications. The revised specifications are now the standard. The settlement documentation is in SSW's legal archive. The question of how many modules fabricated under the old specification remain in service in the inner core, and how many of their pressure seals have accumulated stress comparable to the failed module, is an engineering analysis that SSW has conducted internally and has not published.

Gameplay Relevance

Sova Station Works is environmental infrastructure — the company whose products the player lives and works inside at any inner core station. The quality of the habitat is, in part, SSW's quality. The aging of that habitat is, in part, SSW's old specifications.

The pressure seal issue is a player-accessible investigation. Station maintenance records show which sections were built when and by whom. Engineering databases contain the specification revision history. The analysis of which installed sections were built under the old specification — and whether any of them show early performance degradation — is a project that station safety regulators would care about if it were brought to their attention.
