The sealed envelope: canonical internal truth about what the vigil watches — observation is load-bearing, the founding settlers were recruited, the doors accommodate non-human shift-takers. Project lead direction: verbatim creative decisions and critiques across all workshop rounds. Everything up for grabs when the lead changes their fickle mind. GJ 6711 — Sealed Envelope
INTERNAL CANON — NOT PLAYER-FACING
This document contains the canonical truth about GJ 6711 (Stillpoint). The game should never confirm this directly. All player-accessible information should remain consistent with this truth without revealing it.
What Is There
Something at GJ 6711 requires continuous observation to remain stable. Not dangerous if watched. Unknown if not watched. The founding settlers discovered that whatever is here — astronomical, geological, perceptual, topological, all four, none of them — requires witnesses. The act of observation is load-bearing.
Why the Gate Exists
The doubled-light environment (K-type primary + gas giant reflection) is not a side effect. It is the condition. The system was chosen because the light environment produces a specific quality of attention in observers. The gate builders needed watchers here and built the gate accordingly.
Why People Stay
Three hundred years of unbroken vigil. The founding settlers didn't find something. They were recruited — not by beings, but by the situation. They understood, at some point after arrival, that leaving would be abandonment. What began as duty became identity. The community exists to keep watch.
What the Community Knows
The locals aren't hiding a secret. They are the secret's mechanism. Their "accommodation" with the place (Paula's tier 4) isn't peace — it's the watch internalized. They don't talk about it not because it's forbidden but because there is no way to explain a vigil to someone who doesn't know what is being watched. You either understand or you don't. Understanding comes from staying.
The Recruitment Pattern
Everyone who stays long enough is recruited by the same process:
- The third Adams & Ford correspondent didn't fail. They were promoted.
- The Veil Institute researcher is in year 6 because the researcher is now keeping watch.
- Commission personnel either leave quickly or stay forever. There is no middle ground because there is no middle ground — you either see what needs watching or you don't.
The "warmth-without-origin" that newcomers experience is not the system being welcoming. It is the community pulling newcomers in because they need them. More watchers. More hands on the wall.
The Doors
The doors in Mode 1 structures are 10-15% taller than standard because sometimes the watch changes and not everything that takes a shift is human-sized.
The Four Frames, Resolved
Miri's four possible answers (astronomical, geological, perceptual, topological) are all partial views of the same function. They collapse into a single operational truth: this place needs witnesses and the conditions here produce them. The frames remain useful as player-facing investigation paths because each one illuminates a facet of the same underlying reality without exposing the whole.
Design Constraint
The player should be able to accumulate evidence consistent with all of the above. They should never receive confirmation. The Adams & Ford entry they file is their attempt to describe something they experienced but cannot prove. It propagates into the Reach as authoritative-looking and probably incomplete. Whether the player understood what they were part of is between them and the game.
