"Biome" describes per-zone vegetation classification (Whittaker table). "Planet class" describes overall planetary character. The conflation caused the planet generator to misclassify ~270 bodies as barren. Scope: systems.db column, schema SQL, Rust atlas code, wiki table headers (Biome → Class), atlas proposal JSONs, all docs/decisions, tooling scripts. Also normalizes atmosphere vocabulary (breathable → standard) and expands planet class mapping to all 26 wiki values. Unknown classes default to temperate for modder safety. GJ 868 sits at the junction where two Portuguese-speaking corridor communities face each other across an empty system that both of them call theirs.
Pedra Funda at GJ 204 lies on one side. Dois Sóis at GJ 707 lies on the other. Both are established communities, both with Portuguese founding cultures, both using this system as a transit waypoint in the corridor between them. For generations the people of both communities have passed through GJ 868 on the way to visit each other, trade with each other, and conduct the ordinary business of frontier corridor neighbors. The empty world hanging in the transit data has been present in both communities' awareness for the entire duration of that relationship.
The primary world is a K-type habitable zone body: temperate conditions, adequate water, stable geology. Survey reports, which have been produced by both communities' own survey capabilities over the decades, consistently describe a world that meets settlement criteria without presenting any unusual challenge or any unusual opportunity. It is a good world. It is not a spectacular world.
What makes GJ 868 notable is the social dynamic rather than the physical one. The Portuguese corridor communities have discussed joint settlement of this system in various forms for approximately a century and a half. The discussions have been frequent, warm, and inconclusive. The practical obstacle is governance: joint settlement between two established communities with different internal governance structures requires agreeing on which structure the new settlement will inherit, and that agreement has proven elusive in every iteration. Each community believes the arrangement should favor its own governance model. Neither community believes this is unreasonable. The discussions continue.
An informal naming tradition has developed over the decades. The corridor communities call the system "Encontro" — "meeting" in Portuguese — acknowledging its function as the place where their two communities meet in transit. The name has no official standing. There is no settlement to register it. It persists in oral use among the people who move between Pedra Funda and Dois Sóis, and it appears in community records with the wistful quality of a name that belongs to a thing that does not yet exist.
