Overview
Sendai Forge produces bladed tools, cutting instruments, and custom metalwork from Kurashiki, an east reach system whose traditional forging culture has been continuous for over two centuries. The company is the oldest operating forge in Kurashiki and the one with the most established reputation in the inward specialty market. Operations
Prestige line: Custom and limited-run pieces worked by senior smiths from material selection through final finishing. Forging, shaping, grinding, and edge work all performed by the same senior smith on each piece. Production is slow — a complex prestige piece takes one to three weeks of a senior smith's time. Output is approximately 150 pieces per year across all senior smiths. These are what the inward market pays premium prices for.
Standard and production line: Working tools for the east reach trade market and for wholesale distribution. Higher volume, work divided across specialist stages, with multiple workers contributing to each piece. Production tooling makes the forming and shaping stages more consistent and faster.

What They Don't Talk About
The master-forge certification charter's standard — "master-overseen production, verified by senior smith inspection and certification" — has been the operative definition for forty years. When it was adopted, "master-overseen production" described the actual production process: senior smiths directed and participated in every significant stage of each certified piece, with the final inspection stage being the formal documentation of what the senior smith had already been present for.
As production volume has increased to meet market demand, "master-overseen" has been reinterpreted in practice. The current production workflow for the standard and production line uses apprentice and production smiths for the forming and intermediate stages, with a senior smith reviewing the completed piece at the inspection stage. The inspection is genuine — senior smiths apply the certification mark only to pieces they assess as meeting standard. They do not participate in the production that precedes the inspection.
The proportion of certified pieces on which a senior smith directly worked at any production stage — rather than inspecting a completed piece — has fallen from approximately 70% two decades ago to below 30% today, as the production workforce has grown and the volume line has expanded. The certification charter has not been updated. The inspection standard is still described as "master-overseen production." The inspection and the oversight are, for most of the production line, the same moment.
Gameplay Relevance
Sendai Forge is east reach cultural texture — a heritage institution with a market reputation that functions as economic infrastructure for the specialty tool and collector markets. The certification practice is the investigative thread.
A player with access to Sendai's production workflow records — job assignments, forge time logs, inspection records — can reconstruct the proportion of certified pieces on which a senior smith contributed at stages other than final inspection. The production records cover every piece by forge log entry. The senior smith inspection records are separate documentation. The gap between the two is the discrepancy.
A senior smith who is uncomfortable with the drift from the charter's original intent is a possible source — someone who understands what the certification was designed to mean and is aware that production volume has made that meaning harder to sustain.
