Reach Standard Media
Type: Corporation — Cultural Content Producer (News and Editorial) Status: Canonical Scope: Core primary; reach-wide distribution secondary Headquarters: Sirius (GJ 244A) — core corridor, Commission hub system, 1 hop from Gateway Classification: Sub-Syndic cultural enterprise; reach-wide news and editorial organization
Overview
Reach Standard Media produces the news and current affairs content that constitutes the Reach's default information layer. Its journalism covers Commission activity, corridor economics, industrial incidents, political developments in the systems that generate them, and the slow institutional changes that define how the Reach's governance and commerce evolve. RSM's content is not the only source for any of this. It is the source that most people across most corridors encounter as background.
The company's editorial independence charter is its most publicized institutional commitment. The charter, available in full on RSM's institutional communications page, establishes formal separation between editorial decisions and advertising relationships. The charter is genuine in origin and genuine in daily operation — RSM's journalists and editors make coverage decisions without routine interference from the advertising team. The separation is real.
The charter also contains a revenue threshold clause. This clause is not in the publicly distributed version.
Origin
Reach Standard Media was established sixty-seven years ago in Sirius as an expansion of a smaller corridor news service that had been operating from Gateway. The Sirius relocation was strategic — proximity to the Commission made RSM the primary news organization covering Commission activity, which gave it a reliable source of high-significance stories and an institutional relationship with the Commission's public affairs office.
The company grew by acquisition over the following three decades, absorbing regional news operations in the inward and core corridors and converting them into RSM bureaus. The reach-wide distribution network is the result of this consolidation. The editorial independence charter was adopted forty-two years ago, after a period of advertiser pressure on coverage decisions that produced a significant internal staff conflict and ultimately a public statement from RSM's founders that the organization would formalize its separation of editorial and commercial.
Operations
News and current affairs: RSM's core output — daily news coverage, investigative features, and analytical commentary on Commission, economic, and political developments. The Sirius bureau produces the flagship content; system bureaus feed regional stories to the network. The investigative team is independent of both the news cycle and the advertising relationship.
Cultural content: Original documentary and cultural features, produced at a lower volume than news but distributed through the same reach-wide network. This content is less commercially significant but maintains RSM's self-positioning as more than a news organization.
Distribution: RSM's content distributes through its own subscriber network and through licensing agreements with regional distributors, including Open Corridor Stream for archival catalogue access. The journalism archive is deposited with Reach Archive Standard under an institutional agreement.
Workforce: Approximately 180 editorial, production, and technical staff across the Sirius headquarters and eight corridor bureaus.
Political Relationships
Lattice Commission: The proximity relationship is RSM's most significant institutional asset. Commission public affairs officers treat RSM as the primary media contact for official statements. RSM journalists have access to Commission press briefings that other organizations do not. This access is managed; RSM's coverage of Commission activity is not controlled by the Commission, but the access relationship creates incentives toward coverage that maintains the relationship.
Ashwick Broadcasting: A core competitor in the reach-wide news segment. The two organizations compete directly for major stories and for the institutional relationships that generate access. RSM is larger; Ashwick is faster on some categories of story.
Reach Archive Standard: Institutional depositor for RSM's journalism archive. The deposit relationship is long-standing.
What They Don't Talk About
The editorial independence charter's publicly distributed text establishes formal separation between editorial and advertising and defines the procedures for managing advertiser relationships that attempt to influence coverage. What the publicly distributed text does not include is the full charter text.
The internal charter — the version that RSM's governance board operates under — contains an additional section defining "revenue concentration" procedures. The section states that if any single advertising account represents more than 15% of RSM's total advertising revenue in a rolling quarterly period, RSM's editorial board is required to convene an "editorial calibration review" for any planned coverage that involves that advertiser or the advertiser's affiliated interests.
The editorial calibration review process is defined in an internal procedures document. The procedures document does not specify what the review is supposed to produce. In practice, over fourteen consecutive quarters in which one advertiser has exceeded the 15% threshold, three significant investigative features involving that advertiser's affiliated interests have been postponed indefinitely after calibration reviews. None of these features were killed formally. They are in the system as "pending editorial clearance."
RSM's journalists know that some stories involving specific subjects move slowly. The specific threshold mechanism that determines which subjects is not known outside the governance board and the senior editorial team.
Gameplay Relevance
RSM is a reach-wide media institution — the default information environment for most of the Reach's population. For a player navigating the core or Commission-adjacent material, RSM's coverage decisions and access relationships are relevant context.
The editorial calibration mechanism is the investigative thread. A player who accesses RSM's internal charter documentation — the full version, not the published summary — finds the revenue threshold clause. Cross-referencing against RSM's advertiser records identifies the account consistently above threshold. Cross-referencing against the three postponed investigative features identifies what that advertiser does not want RSM to publish.
The postponed features are the more significant material. They represent completed investigative work that has been de-facto suppressed. Wherever they are stored in RSM's editorial system, they exist as documents.
