Waterkant sits at the threshold of the Cairn pocket extension — a farming corridor that continues the Dutch-Afrikaans agricultural tradition carried inward from earlier core settlements. The name means "waterside" in Afrikaans, and it fits: the system's habitable world is low and wet, with wide floodplains that draw long shadows under the M-dwarf's rust-orange light. Two hundred years of settlement have turned the original homestead plots into established agri-communes, the kind that barely need managing because everyone already knows their role.

The system sits between the busier corridor behind it and the younger outposts ahead. Neither a destination nor a true waypoint, it occupies the unglamorous middle of a corridor — a place people pass through without stopping unless they have family here. Which many do. The population is small, generationally rooted, and deeply indifferent to anyone in a hurry.

Authority is intermittent. Commission representatives pass through on scheduled circuits, and there is a local cooperative council that handles almost everything before it becomes their problem. Disputes over water rights and field boundaries — the oldest kind of disputes humans carry with them — make up most of the docket.

Supply Dependency

Waterkant feeds outposts deeper in the Cairn pocket extension. Processed grain, preserved protein cultures, and basic fabrication stock move spinward along the corridor toward Breëvlei and Stilwater. Return traffic is thin — tools, replacement components, the occasional specialist — which gives the system a slightly one-directional feel economically.

Faction Notes

The Landbou Raad — an informal agricultural cooperative council — functions as de facto governance for most civil matters. It predates any formal Commission presence by over a century and still handles resource allocation, boundary arbitration, and settlement licensing. The Commission's local liaison holds an office in the main transit node and is politely tolerated.

Silence Topic

Water allocation upstream of the corridor's shared aquifer systems. The Cairn pocket runs on water, and Waterkant sits at a choke point. Neighboring settlements have long memories about dry years.

Narrative Hook

A survey team passed through eight months ago with credentials that didn't match any Commission project register — they were measuring something in the aquifer basin, not agricultural yield, and nobody on the Landbou Raad knows who sent them.

Calibration Note

Wave_4 at hop 5 is consistent with the Cairn pocket's incremental push — settled from the inside out, with Waterkant predating the systems it now supplies.
