Voss is the shift supervisor. Nils Davan (Kael's older sibling, ring coordinator, off-stage in v0.1) gives orders through intermediaries that Voss is expected to follow. Voss resents this — he has positional authority on the floor, but the ring's needs override his scheduling decisions. He complies because the money is good and because refusing Nils has consequences he doesn't want to test.
