Neugrund

GJ 675 | K-type | deep_frontier

The name means "new ground," which is accurate in two senses: the community is forty to eighty years old, and the cultural experiment it represents is also new. Neugrund was deliberately founded by a mixed cohort — German, Portuguese, and Dutch-heritage families recruited from three different corridors by an organizer who believed that corridor monocultures were the Reach's fundamental weakness. The experiment is ongoing. The results are interesting. Not all of them are comfortable.

Supply Dependency

Neugrund is still in its establishment phase. The agricultural base is young — second or third generation of K-type adaptation, drawing on three distinct cultural agricultural traditions that are being tested against the same conditions and producing somewhat different results. The community imports food supplements while the agricultural system matures. Manufactured goods and medical equipment come through both GJ 189 (Altgrund) to the inner reach and GJ 3403 to the south corridor.

The three-corridor supply relationship is the material expression of the founding concept. Neugrund has maintained deliberate relationships with supplier communities in all three heritage corridors rather than becoming wholly dependent on one. Whether this is prudent diversification or institutional overextension is a live operational question.

Faction Notes

No external faction has a formal presence. The community's relationship to the Compact of Westphalia is complicated — the German-heritage families bring Compact cultural inheritance, but the Portuguese and Dutch-heritage families do not, and the community has not sought Compact affiliation because the founding premise was explicitly multi-corridor. Affiliation with a German-heritage institution would foreclose the cultural synthesis the organizer was trying to build.

The Guardians of Autonomy have expressed interest in Neugrund as a case study in multi-heritage frontier settlement. The community has received two Guardian field visits and found them somewhat more interested in validating a theoretical position than in helping with practical problems.

Silence Topic

What Neugrund does not discuss with outside observers: the ongoing governance dispute about which language should serve as the community's language of record.

The practical answer is that all three heritage languages are in use and the community functions bilingually or trilingually depending on context. The symbolic answer — which language the official records are kept in, which language is used in governance proceedings, which language a child learns to read in first — has not been resolved. Each heritage community views the current informal plurality as temporary, expecting eventual resolution in their preferred direction. The organizer who founded the community regarded the language question as solvable in the second generation; it is now the second generation, and it is not solved. The community presents a unified face to outsiders. The internal tension is more visible at the family level than at the institutional level, and the institutional level is working hard to keep it that way.

Neugrund's founding organizer believed that corridor monocultures were the Reach's weakness and recruited deliberately from three heritage corridors; forty years in, the food and architecture have synthesized but the governance structure is contested in ways the organizer's design documents didn't anticipate.
