THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — NOVA ESTRADA
NOVA ESTRADA means "new road," and the wave-5 settlers who arrived thirty years ago chose the name with the aspiration that aspiration implies — they were young enough to believe that a road, once named, would become what it was called.
Why No One Came Before
A G0V primary at hop 18 had been in the survey data for centuries. The conditions were known: solar-type light, warm and bright, a habitable world with thick atmosphere, active weather, surface water, a native ecology that is present but not aggressively competitive. Nobody came.
The corridor through Claraboia and GJ 726 did not exist as a functional supply route until the wave-4 systems established themselves. Once Kettenschmied was forging components at hop 15 and Claraboia was producing ecological data at hop 16, the route through GJ 726 to GJ 672 became viable in the specific sense that a founding cohort with modest capital could reach hop 18 with a reasonable expectation of receiving supply within two years of arrival. The window opened. Twenty-eight families took it.
What Thirty Years Builds
The population is approximately 200 people, including 47 children born on-world — the first generation whose relationship to the Reach's institutions is purely theoretical, because the institutions have not reached them and show no sign of trying. Temporary structures are being replaced by permanent ones. Agricultural plots are in the first and second amendment cycles. An infrastructure deficit is being addressed one project at a time.
The governance conversation has stalled. The founding agreement is straining as the community grows beyond the original twenty-eight families. The question of whether to formalize governance with a proper charter has been raised in community meetings three times in the past decade. Each time, the vote was deferred. The community is not ready to decide what kind of community it is. It is still becoming.
The Strategic Position
The through-route gives the community one asset: corridor traffic heading deeper passes through, and that traffic occasionally includes people willing to trade labor or goods for provisions. Nova Estrada is beginning to position itself as a waypoint — not yet reliably provisioned enough to be a true resupply stop, but present enough that the corridor's sparse traffic has started to factor it into route planning. Supply intervals average fourteen to eighteen months. A single missed shipment would not be catastrophic. Two would force rationing. The community has not yet had to find out what three would do.
Practical Information
Nova Estrada is eighteen hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 726 and Entremeio. Basic provisions may be available. The G0V primary is genuinely pleasant after the dim K-dwarfs to the inner side. The children who were born here have never seen a dim star and find the concept difficult to imagine.
