Orchard's End is the kind of name that tells you what the founders wanted and, by the possessive, that one person wanted it more than the others.
The K2 primary is a good agricultural star — amber-warm, stable, the light spectrum that adapted crop strains respond to without supplemental radiation. The habitable world is a terrestrial body in the inner habitable zone with a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere that requires no supplemental pressure, surface water in modest but reliable quantities, and soil chemistry that wave_4 survey teams rated as "immediately cultivable with standard biological amendment." For a spur-end system at hop 14, this is unusual. Most deep frontier systems at this distance offer marginal conditions. Orchard's End offers conditions that would be unremarkable at hop 6 and are therefore remarkable at hop 14.
The founding expedition arrived approximately 180 years ago during the wave_4 expansion, following the corridor through Errai and GJ 201. The expedition leader was Marta Orchard, a third-generation agriculturalist from the south_reach corridor whose family had accumulated enough capital across two prior settlements to fund a deep-frontier founding expedition. Orchard chose this system specifically — the survey data was on file, the conditions were known, and the spur-end topology guaranteed the isolation she wanted. Her cooperative charter, filed with the Commission and still on record, specifies the founding intent: a self-sustaining agricultural community with no Syndic affiliation, no corporate supply contracts, and no economic dependency that could be leveraged into governance influence from outside.
The charter has held. One hundred and eighty years of agricultural development on a genuinely habitable world has produced a community of approximately four thousand people — small by inner-Reach standards, the largest permanent population in this section of the deep frontier. The orchards that give the settlement its visible character are adapted stone-fruit cultivars that Marta Orchard brought from her family's south_reach holdings, modified for the K2 light spectrum over six generations of selective cultivation. The trees line the settlement's central valley in rows that are visible from orbit during the fruiting season, a pale amber stripe against the darker native groundcover.
The spur-end topology is the settlement's defining feature and its deliberate choice. One gate in, one gate out, both the same aperture connecting to GJ 903 (Errai). Nobody passes through Orchard's End on their way to somewhere else. Every arrival is intentional. This has produced a community that is welcoming in the specific way that communities are welcoming when they have chosen their isolation and are confident enough in it to be generous to visitors without fearing that visitors will change anything.
The community's relationship with Errai is the primary external connection — agricultural surplus moves inward along the corridor, technical supplies move outward. The relationship is stable, mutually beneficial, and conducted with the particular formality of neighbors who respect each other's independence enough to negotiate every exchange as though it were the first.
Supply Dependency
Technical components and medical supplies from the mid-Reach via the Errai corridor. Agricultural equipment fabrication parts are the critical dependency. The community's three-generation investment in local manufacturing capability has reduced but not eliminated the need for imported precision components. Food security is entirely local — Orchard's End is a net food exporter, one of the few deep frontier systems that produces agricultural surplus reliably enough to enter corridor trade.
Faction Notes
No institutional presence. Governance follows the founding charter: a cooperative council with membership drawn from landholding families and, since a charter amendment ninety years ago, from any resident who has completed five years of community labor contribution. The amendment was Marta Orchard's granddaughter's doing — she recognized that a governance structure limited to founding families would calcify into oligarchy within a few more generations. The amendment is cited in some mid-Reach cooperative governance literature as an example of frontier self-correction, though the community has not sought the citation and would likely find the attention unwelcome.
Narrative Hook
A self-sustaining agricultural community at hop 14, founded by a woman who chose the furthest good land she could find, whose orchards are visible from orbit and whose charter has survived 180 years without the institutional infrastructure that inner-Reach cooperatives rely on.
Calibration Note
Wave_4 settlement at a spur_end at hop 14 with favorable conditions is explained by the conjunction of genuinely good survey data and a founder with the specific capital and motivation to reach this distance. The K2 primary and the habitable world's conditions are unusually favorable for this hop distance; the spur-end topology and deep frontier location explain why no earlier wave claimed them.
