Settlement unsettled

GJ 394 is the anteroom.

A dim M-dwarf primary, a habitable zone that survey teams consistently describe as technically within parameters and practically marginal — the primary world is cold, dry, and atmospherically sparse in the way that the outer edges of M-dwarf habitable zones tend to produce. Nothing about the system is hospitable. Nothing about it is dangerous in any way that would prevent transit. It exists in the corridor between GJ 177 and Einde at GJ 407, and its primary function in the transit graph is that it connects them.

Anyone traveling to Einde must pass through GJ 394. This is not incidental. The geography of the dead-end corridor means that the experience of reaching the furthest community in this section of the frontier includes a transit hop through an empty, dim, unwelcoming system. The cold world visible in the navigational display during that transit is not quite hostile, not quite habitable, and entirely consistent with the mood of approaching a community that chose maximum distance from institutional authority and settled past an empty space on purpose.

Survey teams have described the primary world as "meeting minimum atmospheric parameters" and "suitable for emergency shelter with appropriate equipment." Neither characterization suggests a settlement opportunity. Neither characterization has been offered in a tone of disappointment, because the survey teams knew what they were looking at.

GJ 394 is a corridor node. It connects two points. It is empty, and its emptiness is appropriate.
