THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — LICHTUNG
LICHTUNG means "clearing" — the gap in the forest where the light gets through — and after the succession of dim M-dwarfs that line the corridor between here and Hansestadt, the F-type primary waiting at the end of it genuinely earns the name.
The Light
White and sharp. Shadows with edges. The UV environment shapes the architecture: covered walkways, tinted glazing, vegetation canopies designed to filter rather than block. The community that grew from those early choices has an outdoor culture defined by relationship with the star rather than avoidance of it, which distinguishes Lichtung from most of its corridor neighbors in ways that are immediately visible to anyone arriving from further in.
Wave 5 settlement. Forty to a hundred years old. The settlement charter is a generation old. The first generation of locally born adults is entering civic life and has opinions about how things should work. The founding German-heritage cultural tradition persists in language and naming. It is being renegotiated by people who have never seen any other home. This is how founding cultures become local cultures, and Lichtung is early enough in the process that both the transplant and the renegotiation are visible simultaneously.
Access is through Marktfeld, one gate, one direction. The commercial relationship with Marktfeld is developmental: a young community that needs the connection to survive, on terms Marktfeld sets. The Commission vessel visits annually.
The Land
The settlement charter's land allocation clauses were negotiated with a Marktfeld-based commercial interest before the Commission was formally involved in the founding process. Several allotments in the most productive UV-sheltered agricultural zone were pre-committed before public settlement began. The founding council passed a resolution recently — not yet transmitted to the Commission or to Marktfeld — declaring one of those pre-committed allotments abandoned and opening it for local redistribution. The commercial interest that holds the original claim does not yet know.
These things proceed differently on new settlements than on established ones, partly because the institutional relationships that would constrain them on established settlements are still forming, and partly because the people making the decisions have not yet learned to be cautious about which ones cannot be taken back.
Practical Information
Lichtung is seven hops from Gateway with one aperture connecting to Marktfeld. The star is bright. The community is young. The land question is pending.
