THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — HALTEFENN
HALTEFENN means "stopping fen" — the settling point at the edge of the bogland — and the name was written into a survey record before anyone knew they would still be using it four hundred years later, which is either good naming instinct or an argument against overthinking these things.
The Bog Planet
From pole to equator: raised bogs, blanket bogs, estuarine fens, shallow lake systems choked with sedge. Dry land exists at higher elevations, and the settlements are built there, but the economy has always been the peat below. Four hundred years of extraction have barely dented the deposit base. The peat beds run dozens of meters deep. The k-m transitional star — not quite K, not quite M, old and dim and steady — produces a light quality that settlers noticed affects plant growth cycles differently than most K-type worlds, and four hundred years of living under it have produced farming schedules and festival timing that visitors find disorienting.
The community celebrates the Winterfenn. The multi-day observance around the deepest seasonal darkness predates any organized religious institution in the west reach. The practices are local, specific, and not easily explained to someone who did not grow up counting the dark by how the light changes on peat water.
Fennkohle compressed peat fuel blocks move inward through GJ 453. Wetland botanicals used in medicines and flavorings move inward. Hand-manufactured goods — carved artifacts, woven fen-grass textiles — move inward to antiquarians in the inner corridor who value pre-consensus craft traditions. The economy is modest and consistent, which is what four-century extractive communities look like when the deposit base is large enough that the question of exhaustion is academic.
The Paperwork
Haltefenn's founding documents are unusually sparse compared to other wave_2 systems. Standard survey protocol required ecological assessments, habitability certifications, and prospecting reports before a settlement license was issued. Haltefenn has the license. The supporting documentation is not present — either lost in transit, never filed, or filed and subsequently removed. The community does not discuss this. Hausrat members asked about it note that the world is clearly habitable and clearly settled and that the question of old paperwork does not concern them. A researcher arrived fourteen months ago to document the Winterfenn observances. No communications have been filed since — neither completion nor departure.
Practical Information
Haltefenn is eight hops from Gateway with one aperture connecting to GJ 453. The Brenner families have held the primary peat extraction concessions since founding and carry disproportionate weight in council deliberations. This is understood as a feature of the system, not a corruption of it.
