THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — HELDEROOG
HELDEROOG means "bright eye," and the F5/F6V primary is the brightest star on the entire corridor — a white subgiant that requires viewport filtering on approach. After the dim K5 of Eerste Wacht and the K-M binary of the unsettled gap behind it, the transition into Helderoog's system is a physical shock. The light is not amber. It is not red. It is not the managed dimness of the deep frontier's K-dwarf corridor. It is white.
The Daughter Colony
Wave-4 settlement at hop 19, 160 years ago, from Eerste Wacht. Not a long-range expedition from the inner Reach — a daughter colony of the 500-year-old community one hop behind. Eerste Wacht's population had reached the point where the elder council determined that the community's carrying capacity and genetic diversity protocols required expansion. The survey data for GJ 111 was available: F5/F6V primary, lush habitable world, thick atmosphere, active hydrology. One aperture connecting back to Eerste Wacht. Close enough to maintain familial and cultural connection, far enough to establish an independent community.
The Afrikaans naming convention continues. The conditions diverged from the parent settlement immediately. Where Eerste Wacht is arid, careful, and conservative, Helderoog is verdant, expansive, and confident in the way that communities are confident when they have good land and enough light. The population is approximately 1,200 people — three times Eerste Wacht's, sustained by agricultural output the parent settlement's dry world could never match.
The Relationship
Most residents of either settlement can name relatives in the other. The founding families' surnames overlap significantly across both community rosters. Agricultural surplus from Helderoog flows to Eerste Wacht, reversing the dependency that characterized the daughter settlement's first generation. Medical technology and genetic material for the shared partnership protocols travel through the same corridor in the other direction. The two communities maintain a relationship that is familial in the literal sense and that produces the specific disagreements families produce: mild, ongoing, never serious enough to resolve.
The governance divergence is one of them. Helderoog's founders, having grown up under Eerste Wacht's unwritten customary law, chose to write it down. The written charter is more transparent and less flexible. Neither community finds this damning enough to change.
The Double Isolation
One gate in, one gate out, both connecting to Eerste Wacht. Nobody reaches Helderoog without passing through the older community first. Eerste Wacht's remoteness, multiplied by Helderoog's remoteness from Eerste Wacht. The community does not experience this as isolation. They experience it as home — the specific experience of home that comes when you have never been anywhere else and the somewhere else is nineteen hops of corridor that nobody has felt the need to cross in the other direction.
Practical Information
Helderoog is nineteen hops from Gateway with one aperture connecting to Eerste Wacht. Agricultural surplus is available. The F5/F6V primary is the corridor's most visible navigational landmark. Genetic diversity protocols are managed in coordination with Eerste Wacht.
