Supply Dependency

Ratnagiri is four hundred years old and has been feeding the same export markets for three of them. The twin-sun system produces an agricultural environment unlike anything else on the north_reach corridor — the dual-star light regime creates growth cycles that cannot be replicated in single-star systems, and the specific spice-crop complex that the founding Desai family's agronomists developed in the second generation of settlement has never been successfully cultivated anywhere else. This is not for lack of trying. The varietal genetics have been licensed, exported, and planted on a dozen other worlds. The results are never the same. Something about the paired illumination — the specific wavelength ratios, the alternating shadow patterns, the rhythmic temperature variation — appears to be required. Ratnagiri's spice export is, in practical terms, a monopoly that no one engineered and no one can break.

The system is self-sufficient in everything else. The agricultural base produces adequate food crops. Local manufacturing covers maintenance requirements. The spur topology means there is no through traffic, no external demand for transit services. Ratnagiri imports very little and exports one thing, and it has found this arrangement entirely satisfactory for four centuries.

Faction Notes

The Desai family is the founding family in the most literal sense: they arrived on the wave_2 land survey, established the agricultural cooperative structure, developed the spice-crop varietal, and have been here since. Current generations of the family hold no formal governance position — the local parliament is elected, has been elected for two centuries, and functions independently. What the Desai family holds is cultural authority and the original cultivation knowledge, passed through apprenticeship rather than documentation. The institutional knowledge of how to grow Ratnagiri spice is not written down anywhere accessible. It is in people. The people are all here.

No external faction has a significant footprint. Gate Corporation's rotating contract crew handles aperture maintenance. The Assembly's nearest administrative presence is at Enugu, two hops inward. Ratnagiri files its annual compliance documentation, pays its assessments, and is otherwise left alone. Being left alone is what the system prefers.

Silence Topic

The cultivation knowledge is the silence. Not that it exists — that is widely known — but the specific question of succession: what happens to the cultivation tradition if the family line ends, or fragments, or decides to leave. The Desai family has no formal answer to this question. The local government has no formal answer. The spice export is the system's primary revenue source, and the continuity of that revenue source depends entirely on an informal apprenticeship tradition whose institutional status has never been examined. This is either a deeply stable arrangement, because it has lasted four centuries, or a deeply fragile one, because nothing about it is documented.

Narrative Hook

The cultivation knowledge that makes Ratnagiri's export irreplaceable has no written record and no institutional custodian — it lives in the Desai family's apprenticeship tradition, and the last three generations have each produced fewer apprentices than the one before.

Calibration Note

wave_2 spur_end at hop_distance: 8 with a binary stellar system is an unusual physical profile. The G2V + G2V pairing — two sun-like stars — creates a habitable zone geometry significantly more complex than single-star systems, which would normally discourage agricultural settlement. The founding survey must have identified conditions compatible with development, and the subsequent cultivation success suggests those conditions were more favorable than the standard assessment framework would predict. The Konkan-coast heritage exception is an Early Arrival archetype: the founding party followed a specific economic opportunity (land survey contract, favorable soil composition data) into a corridor where they had no cultural neighbors for the first century of settlement.
