The name arrived with the founding generation and required no committee. Inhambane is a coastal city in Mozambique, one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in that part of the continent — the name itself predates Portuguese contact, coming from the Tswa language, meaning roughly "the place where people look for each other." The wave_3 settlers who chartered this system three hundred years ago were Mozambican by heritage, agricultural by training, and pragmatic about what a junction position in the middle of the outer south_reach corridor would need to become to survive. They needed it to feed people. They built silos before they built a council chamber.
The planet that became Inhambane's primary inhabited world is warm and humid, with a geology that has produced extensive alluvial plains across its northern continent — thick, fine-grained soil over a flat substrate that retains moisture through the long growing cycles. The first agricultural survey described it as improbably generous. The founding families had seen the data before departure and had packed accordingly: not just settlers but an entire seed bank and the machinery to process what it would produce. By the end of the first generation, the system was producing surplus. By the end of the second, it was producing more grain than the local population could plausibly consume, which created both the economic model and the problem that has defined Inhambane ever since.
Where do you put that much grain? The answer, developed over two centuries of incremental infrastructure investment, is a network of atmosphere-controlled storage facilities — silos in the formal sense but built to a scale that makes the word insufficient. The largest complex, in the northern plain near the original founding settlement, holds enough processed grain to feed Zenzele and Crux Station's combined population for eighteen months without a single additional harvest. Three hundred years of maintenance and expansion have made this infrastructure the most sophisticated agricultural storage operation in the south_reach. The moisture control systems, the pest management protocols, the inventory management software developed locally and now licensed to outer south_reach systems — all of it built by people whose founding ethic was that food security was the precondition for everything else.
The three gates connect to Crux Station (inward), GJ 1245B (Akhgar), and GJ 829 (outward). The Crux Station connection is the primary import and export corridor; Inhambane's grain moves toward inner systems through Crux Station and onward. The GJ 829 connection extends the corridor outward into systems that depend on Inhambane's processing capacity for their own agricultural output — smaller producers who grow but lack the infrastructure to store and ship efficiently.
The settlement governance is what you would expect from a community founded by agricultural cooperatives and left largely to its own management for three centuries: a council of storage operators and field cooperatives, with rotating seat allocation weighted by production contribution. Formally equitable. In practice, the three families who managed the first grain storage expansion — and whose descendants still hold the operating licenses for the major storage complexes — have a structural weight in council proceedings that is not written into the charter but is not absent from the room.
Supply Dependency
Inhambane is a net exporter of processed grain, storage services, and agricultural infrastructure technology. The storage management software developed here — sold under the name Armazém — runs inventory systems at agricultural facilities across the south_reach and in several west_reach systems. It imports refined fuels, technical equipment for the storage facilities, and the modest luxury goods that a productive but geographically isolated community accumulates demand for over three centuries. The system is not supply-dependent in any critical sense; its food production is structurally insulated against disruption at adjacent systems. This is deliberate.
Faction Notes
The Agricultural Storage Cooperative of Inhambane is the oldest institution in the system, predating the formal settlement charter by a few months — the founding families formed the cooperative before completing the charter paperwork because they considered the cooperative more immediately necessary. It now operates as the de facto property management body for the major storage complexes and holds the licensing authority for the Armazém software suite. Its relationship with the settlement council is formally subordinate and practically dominant.
The Grão Freight Cooperative manages outbound grain logistics — the scheduling, packing, manifest documentation, and gate-time coordination for Inhambane's exports. Founded two centuries ago by a coalition of smaller producers who felt the storage cooperative's shipping arrangements favored the major operators, it has since grown to be the second-largest institution in the system. Relations between the two cooperatives are professionally correct and historically adversarial. The freight cooperative has been attempting to acquire a storage license for sixty years.
Silence Topic
The Armazém software's inventory records extend back to its first deployment, two hundred years ago — an unbroken ledger of what was grown, stored, moved, and by whom. The record is technically the property of the systems that licensed it, but the master data repository has always been hosted at Inhambane, a fact that was noted in the original licensing contracts and that most systems' administrators did not flag as significant at the time. What that repository contains is a complete commercial history of agricultural production and trade across a significant arc of the south_reach. The Agricultural Storage Cooperative maintains the repository. Access protocols for individual system records are established per contract. Access to aggregated cross-system data has never been contractually defined, because nobody wrote that clause. The cooperative's position, when the question has been raised, is that aggregated data is an internal operational resource.
Narrative Hook
A Grão Freight Cooperative logistics manager has found a consistent pattern in the Armazém-managed shipment records: a small but statistically stable fraction of outbound grain manifests list weights that do not match the storage intake records, a discrepancy that has persisted for twenty years and represents, in aggregate, several years' worth of a mid-sized farming cooperative's total output.
Calibration Note
GJ 54's spectral type in the profile is listed as "K" without a subtype — an unusually unresolved designation indicating a K-dwarf with incomplete subtype data. The header correctly uses K-type. The briefing designates M-type, but the profile takes precedence. The warm, humid planetary conditions are consistent with a K-dwarf habitable zone at slightly greater orbital distance than an M-dwarf equivalent, which supports the alluvial plain geography and high agricultural productivity.
Wave_3 settlement at hop 5 is consistent with the outer south_reach's expansion pattern: wave_3 emigrants extended the agricultural corridor outward from the wave_2 hubs at Confluência and Matamba, selecting systems with productive potential that would anchor the region's food supply.
