"Biome" describes per-zone vegetation classification (Whittaker table). "Planet class" describes overall planetary character. The conflation caused the planet generator to misclassify ~270 bodies as barren. Scope: systems.db column, schema SQL, Rust atlas code, wiki table headers (Biome → Class), atlas proposal JSONs, all docs/decisions, tooling scripts. Also normalizes atmosphere vocabulary (breathable → standard) and expands planet class mapping to all 26 wiki values. Unknown classes default to temperate for modder safety. Dagat means "sea" in Filipino, and the settlers were not being abstract. The world that GJ 482A's primary body presents is overwhelmingly oceanic — land cover is approximately 8% of the surface, most of it rocky archipelagoes scattered through the tropical and temperate bands — and the settlers arrived three hundred years ago with the clear intention of working the water. The F0V+ primary is a hot, bright star with significant UV output; the habitable world orbits at a distance that keeps surface temperatures in a range humans can work in, but the UV environment requires active sun protection outdoors and has driven a local culture that is predominantly aquatic-habitat-based — working, traveling, and spending leisure time in or on the ocean rather than on land.
The kelp systems of Dagat are the deep economic foundation. Native kelp-analogs colonize the mid-depth shelf zones at densities that the founders recognized as extraordinary — the F-type star's light output supports high-productivity photosynthesis at depths unusual for kelp-class organisms, and the result is a canopy system that in places extends forty meters from floor to surface. Three centuries of cultivation management have produced farmed varieties that grow faster, produce more biomass per square kilometer, and have predictable harvesting cycles while maintaining the biochemical characteristics of their wild relatives.
From the kelp farms comes food — processed kelp products are a significant portion of Dagat's export food volume, with varieties exported to Mabuhay (GJ 1073) and Hạ Long (GJ 124) and further inward where they trade as premium marine products. But the thing that gave Dagat an identity beyond "kelp system" is what happened when a dye processing operation in the third generation found that a specific processing step applied to the largest-biomass kelp variety produced, as a byproduct, a concentrated pigment of an unusually deep blue-green color.
The pigment is called Dagat Blue. It is not a synthetic dye and cannot be synthesized with matching results; the specific biochemical compounds that produce it are present in significant concentrations only in the cultivated large-canopy kelp variety that Dagat has been developing for three centuries, and the processing method that extracts them involves a fermentation stage using native microorganisms from the Dagat ocean. Off-system attempts to reproduce the dye have produced blue-greens that are close in spectral analysis and clearly wrong to the eye — there is something in the native biology that does not transfer.
The Dagat Blue brand launched formally 180 years ago as a textile export product. It is now recognized as far inward as hop 4 systems, where it appears in premium fabric markets as one of the handful of named natural dyes from the outer reach that have achieved corridor-wide recognition. The dye is sold in concentrated form and as pre-dyed fabric. The fabric carries the blue-green that gives the brand its name: deep, slightly variable across pieces (the biological origin means no two batches are identical), and unlike anything produced synthetically.
Supply Dependency
Dagat is self-sufficient in food and in the marine-origin raw materials that support both food and dye production. Technical equipment for the kelp farm management and dye processing operations routes through the through-route connections to Mabuhay (GJ 1073) and Hạ Long (GJ 124). The Dagat Blue export generates the system's premium income and funds the manufactured goods and medical supply imports that a hop-8 system at this size requires. The through-route positioning means Dagat has two supply routes and does not depend entirely on either adjacent system.
Faction Notes
The Dagat Kelp Cultivation Authority manages the shelf zone farms under a zoning system that balances food production areas, dye-production kelp areas, and ecological reserve zones. The Authority's work is technically demanding and politically visible — zone allocation decisions directly affect income distribution between food producers and dye producers, and the two communities have different interests that the Authority is perpetually trying to balance.
The Blue Collective is the certified producer group for Dagat Blue dye and dyed fabric. The Collective controls the fermentation process certification, the quality standards for color depth and consistency, and the brand licensing for the Dagat Blue name. Non-Collective producers can sell kelp-derived dyes but cannot use the Dagat Blue name; the Collective has defended this distinction in legal proceedings four times in the past century and won all four.
The Archipelago Council is the elected governing body, its constituency spread across the scattered island groups in the way that island-archipelago governance always requires: physically distributed, communication-dependent, slow to reach consensus on anything touching physical territory and fast on anything affecting water rights.
Silence Topic
The large-canopy kelp variety that produces the Dagat Blue biochemical compounds is also the most environmentally demanding of Dagat's cultivated varieties — it requires specific water temperatures, specific nutrient concentrations, and specific light conditions across its growing depth. The Blue Collective's internal environmental monitoring, conducted over the past thirty years, shows a slow drift in the optimal growing zone toward deeper water, consistent with a gradual warming of the upper shelf layer. The drift has not yet affected output. If it continues at its current rate, it will affect output within sixty to eighty years. The Cultivation Authority does not have access to the Collective's monitoring data, because the Collective treats it as proprietary production information. The question of whether this data should be shared has never been formally raised.
Narrative Hook
A marine ecologist working for the Cultivation Authority independently detects the same upper-shelf temperature drift in the Authority's own monitoring records and realizes that the Collective must have seen this trend long before she did — and that the Collective's recent lobbying for expanded dye-production zone allocation in the deeper shelf areas suddenly makes more sense than the Collective's official rationale for it.
Calibration Note
The READ-ONLY System Profile classifies GJ 482A as F0V+, indicating a hot F-type star, possibly a multiple system or one with anomalous features noted by the "+" suffix. F-type is the correct header designation; the briefing and original stub had M-type, both inconsistent with the catalog data. The hot F-type star drives the UV environment described, the deep photosynthetic productivity of the kelp system, and the offshore/aquatic lifestyle of the population. Through_route with 2 apertures at hop 8 is consistent with a mid-corridor position between two written Filipino-heritage systems.
