THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 92
GJ 92 is an empty system with good bones, which is the kind of thing estate agents say about houses where someone died in circumstances that don't quite fit the report.
The Vacancy
The star is a K-type — warm enough, stable enough, orbited by a planet that three separate surveys have described as temperate, biologically active, and suitable for settlement. The surveys were conducted. The assessments came back positive. The charter applications were never filed. This is attributed to timing: the Secession disrupted outward migration at precisely the moment GJ 92's corridor was being settled, and the colonists who might have come here went elsewhere or stopped moving entirely.
This explanation is adequate. It does not explain why, in the two centuries since the Secession ended, no one has revisited the question.
The Relay
An automated navigation relay operates near the inner aperture, maintaining transit logs and broadcasting approach data for vessels passing between Nascente and points beyond. The relay is Commission-registered. Its maintenance has been nominally assigned to Nascente's Commission post, which is fully staffed and has nonetheless allowed the last formal inspection to slip past a decade ago. The relay continues to function. It has been broadcasting a navigation warning about a debris field in the inner system for approximately sixty years. The debris is logged as "origin uncertain." No one has been sent to catalogue what it actually is.
The people at Nascente, when asked about GJ 92, become evasive in a way that has no obvious institutional explanation. There is no faction interest to protect, no commercial sensitivity, no political complication — just a through-route with an empty planet and a relay that warns about something nobody has gone to look at.
Practical Information
GJ 92 is seven hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting Nascente and GJ 138. There is no dock, no supply station, no crew. Vessels transiting must carry everything they need. The K-type primary illuminates a habitable zone where something grows on a planet nobody has inspected in living memory, near a debris field nobody has catalogued, in a system nobody has settled despite three positive survey assessments. The corridor is quiet. The relay broadcasts its warning. The warning is not wrong.
