THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — THORNFIELD STATION
THORNFIELD STATION has more building capacity than population, which has been true since the founding period and has never been officially explained, and the founding period was three hundred years ago.
The Station That Did Not Expand
The "Station" modifier was intended to distinguish this initial settlement from future expansion sites. There are no other settlements. James Thornfield was a structural engineer who took a wave_2 frontier development license on grounds that the M2V star's habitable zone offered more long-term potential than the surveys suggested. He was not wrong to see potential. He was optimistic about what potential could be built into in one generation, which is a different kind of wrong and more forgivable.
The original development license was filed for a much larger founding group than arrived. The application listed 847 settlers. The actual founding population was 312. The discrepancy has never been formally explained in any document accessible outside the community's own archive. Local oral history attributes it to a last-minute decision by a large faction of the licensed group to redirect to a different development opportunity that opened unexpectedly. Whether this explanation is complete or partial is not a question the council's records make easy to answer from the outside.
The practical consequence has been a community permanently smaller than its founding infrastructure, living for three centuries in buildings designed for two and a half times as many people.
The Community That Stayed
A single gate connects to Binh Trang — one commercial lifeline for a community that has adapted to that constraint by becoming technically self-reliant in ways that corridor systems with more connections never had to. Residents develop specialist skills and contract out to corridor systems for defined periods, then return. The pattern is consistent enough to be cultural: you can leave, but Thornfield is where you come back to. The founding-family descendants remain on the council without disproportionate authority — the community is small enough that governance by formal structure is somewhat ornamental over informal consensus.
No Lattice Commission office. No Gate Corporation full team — a quarterly maintenance contractor handles the single gate. The Assembly knows Thornfield Station exists because the wave_2 license was registered, and has not reviewed the annual self-reported compliance filing in detail in living memory.
The Guardians of Autonomy have no chapter structure here. Their philosophy is simply ambient.
Practical Information
Thornfield Station is five hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to Binh Trang. The habitable body is marginal — low gravity, thin atmosphere, subsistence agriculture with modest surpluses. The founding buildings have room for more people than currently use them. The community does not describe this as melancholy. They describe it as spacious.
