The word means enclosure — a kraal, the traditional fenced space where cattle were kept and family gathered. In the Zulu communities that seeded this system two hundred years ago, the kraal was not simply an agricultural structure. New arrivals to the system discover quickly that formal settlement council approval for market activities means less than the Ranching Families Assembly's informal endorsement.
The Market Cooperative is the formal body that operates the trading grounds — the infrastructure, the booking, the dispute resolution for in-market transactions. It was established by the settlement government as a counterweight to the Ranching Families' informal control and has, over three generations, carved out genuine operational authority while leaving the broader market culture in the Assembly's gravitational field. The two bodies coexist with the productive tension of institutions that need each other and would prefer more authority than they have.
Silence Topic
The grade standards the Ranching Families Assembly sets before each Umkhosi wa Sika are announced publicly. The adjustment factors applied after the announcement — the informal premium classifications that the established families' stock consistently meet and that new ranchers' stock consistently fails by narrow margins — are not written down anywhere. Buyers who have been coming to Isibaya for decades know to ask about the informal grades. Buyers who do not know are not told. The Market Cooperative is aware this practice exists. It has not formally acknowledged it because doing so would require either endorsing it or eliminating it, and the Cooperative lacks the leverage to eliminate it without the Families' cooperation, which the Families will not provide for that purpose.
