THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — CLARABOIA
CLARABOIA means "skylight" in Portuguese — the window in the roof that lets the light in. The founding settlers chose the name for an F7V primary at hop 16 that is warm, luminous, and brighter than anything for many hops in any direction. They were also, as the founding mythology does not entirely acknowledge, the losers of a governance dispute from a south_reach cooperative, which gave them both the capital and the motivation to go looking for a skylight as far from their former colleagues as the corridor allowed.
What Bright Stars Over Complex Worlds Cost
The habitable world is biologically active at a level the wave-4 survey team spent most of its assessment cataloging rather than measuring soil chemistry. The native biosphere is vigorous — competitive enough that introduced agriculture has required continuous management rather than the plant-and-harvest cycle that simpler worlds allow. The founding generation spent its first decades not farming but negotiating with an ecology that was already successfully running its own food web. Adapted crop strains had to be developed locally because inner-Reach cultivars failed in competition with native organisms.
Two generations of negotiation produced results that the third generation has been cautiously optimizing for 150 years. The community is small — approximately 600 people — and its character is shaped by the ongoing negotiation. Claraboia's residents are, by necessity, amateur ecologists. The knowledge of which native organisms to encourage, which to suppress, and which to leave entirely alone is the community's most valuable practical expertise, accumulated trial by trial and error by error across a century and a half.
The agricultural output is modest but increasing as each generation's ecological knowledge compounds. The founding generation did not know what they were walking into. Their children's children know it well enough to work with it.
The Charter With a Dissolution Protocol
The community was founded by the losing faction of a governance dispute, and the irony of governing themselves by cooperative charter is not lost on them. The charter includes provisions for structured disagreement, mandatory mediation before any governance vote, and a dissolution protocol that specifies asset distribution in the event of community fracture. The dissolution protocol has never been invoked. Its presence in the charter is the community's most honest monument to its founding experience: they know exactly what happens when cooperative governance fails because they watched it happen.
Practical Information
Claraboia is sixteen hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Kettenschmied and GJ 726. The F7V primary is noticeably bright on approach. Trade with Kettenschmied — fabricated components for biological samples and ecological data. Basic reprovisioning available. Visitors with ecological research interests will find the community unusually willing to discuss their work.
