THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 902
GJ 902 has a habitable moon with an iron core, favorable soil chemistry, a stable K3V primary, and three hundred years of unclaimed survey data sitting in the Commission's south Reach registry with no one's name on it.
The Moon
The K3V star is amber and reliable. The rocky inner planet is thin-atmosphered and marginal in the way that inner planets sometimes are. The moon orbiting the system's mid-range gas giant is something else: iron core producing a magnetic field strong enough to deflect stellar wind without additional engineering, surface gravity at approximately 0.82 standard, thin atmosphere manageable with supplemental pressure technology, soil chemistry that tested favorably for adapted agriculture. The wave 3 survey team rated it viable for settlement. The assessment was filed, cataloged, and has been sitting in the Commission's south Reach registry ever since. No charter application followed.
The wave 3 expansion prioritized through-routes and junctions. Wave 4 followed the infrastructure wave 3 created. Wave 5 has concentrated near established nodes. Three hundred years of favorable survey data, and the moon sits in the condition the survey team found it in: habitable, unclaimed, waiting. Occasionally a ship transits through to use the system as a quiet anchorage. These visits are brief and leave no permanent mark.
The Question
The simple answer to why this place remains empty after three hundred years is dead-end topology, corridor development patterns, and the ordinary friction of settlement economics. That answer is accurate. It does not fully account for the duration. Three centuries of unclaimed habitable land, at a hop distance where systems of comparable quality were settled in wave 3 and wave 4, is the kind of gap that eventually attracts attention from parties with more capital than the original survey anticipated.
The Encrucijada hub is coming online at hop 7. New traffic is developing in this corridor. The survey data has been publicly available for three hundred years. It is not obvious that it will remain unclaimed for a fourth.
Practical Information
GJ 902 is seven hops from Gateway with one gate aperture — dead end, connecting to Groombridge 1830. No population. No governance. The horizon station's self-maintenance systems have been running without external intervention since installation. The Commission registry entry has not been updated since the original survey filing.
