The name is Polish for "new steelworks" — specifically, a reference to the planned industrial district built outside Kraków in the twentieth century, a name that carried its own complicated history by the time the founding families chose it. They chose it deliberately. The Kowalski family, whose great-grandparents led the founding wave_3 settlement here three hundred years ago, came from a mixed Polish-South African background and understood the reference in both its industrial and its historical dimensions: this was a place being built from nothing to make things, on a world that had been selected for its resource profile rather than its hospitality, and the name acknowledged the ambition and the difficulty without pretending the difficulty was not real.

GJ 896A is an M6Ve — a late M dwarf with emission activity, dim and flare-prone, sitting at the cool end of the main sequence. The primary inhabited body is a close-orbit world with a strong magnetic field and an infrastructure philosophy, developed over the first generation, that treats the stellar environment as a constraint to be engineered around rather than a problem to be solved. Radiation hardening is mandatory for all surface structures. Flare warnings are part of the daily operational rhythm. The manufacturing facilities are built underground or within heavily shielded structures, not from timidity but from three hundred years of empirical learning about what the M6Ve environment eventually does to unprotected equipment.

What Stalownia Kowalski — Kowalski Steelworks — makes is not steel. The name is inherited; the business is heavy equipment. Drilling platforms. Excavation rigs. Ore processing machinery. Habitat construction systems — the pressurized modules and structural frames that new settlements use to establish their first generation of permanent infrastructure before local construction capacity is developed. The company was founded by the third generation of the Kowalski family, two generations after the settlement, when the family's original mining operation had accumulated sufficient capital and technical expertise to begin designing and building the equipment rather than simply operating it. The equipment they built was better than what they had been importing, which is how these companies typically begin.

Three centuries of continuous operation have made Stalownia Kowalski the south_reach's most significant manufacturer of extraction and construction equipment. Not the most prominent — they are not a consumer brand, they do not have storefronts, they do not appear in Mercado's catalog. But every extraction system in the south_reach has at least one piece of Kowalski equipment in its operational inventory. A significant fraction of the west_reach's extraction operations run on Kowalski drilling platforms. The habitat construction systems that wave_4 and wave_5 frontier settlements used to establish their first pressurized environments were manufactured here. The company's sales are denominated in the kind of numbers that do not appear in public documents.

The founding family structure has persisted through three centuries of corporate evolution — not in the sense that the Kowalski family makes every decision, but in the sense that the senior technical staff still includes Kowalski descendants in key roles, and the company's design philosophy has a continuous line back to the founding generation's approach to engineering. The principle — build the equipment that survives the environment it operates in, not the environment you wish it operated in — is attributed to the second-generation founder and repeated in every new employee orientation. It is also, practitioners in other manufacturing operations note, a principle that is more easily stated than achieved and that Stalownia Kowalski has managed to sustain across three hundred years by treating it as a constraint rather than an aspiration.

The three gates connect to GJ 1116B (Kraków Junction) inward, to GJ 388 and GJ 567 outward. The Kraków Junction connection is the primary corridor; the company's outbound freight moves through the junction's logistics infrastructure and into the broader Reach network. The two outward connections reach toward systems in the outer arc that are, in several cases, running Kowalski equipment and represent both existing customers and the frontier zone where new settlement creates ongoing demand.

Supply Dependency

Nowa Huta exports heavy equipment — drilling rigs, excavation platforms, ore processing systems, and habitat construction modules — under the Stalownia Kowalski brand. Secondary exports include manufactured components and structural materials from the industrial operations. The system imports raw materials for manufacturing: refined metals and specialized compounds from adjacent systems and through the Kraków Junction distribution network. Food is largely produced locally in the shielded agricultural facilities that the founding generation built out of necessity and that produce sufficient variety to reduce import dependence. The manufacturing operations create sufficient local employment that the population has never found it necessary to export labor.

Faction Notes

Stalownia Kowalski is the system's dominant institution in the commercial sense — the largest employer, the largest freight client for the horizon station's logistics infrastructure, and the institution whose procurement decisions shape what other businesses in the system survive and flourish. It is not formally a governance body; the settlement council is a standard elected structure. In practice, decisions that would significantly affect Kowalski's operations go to the company's leadership before reaching the council floor, a convention that has persisted for two hundred years.

The Mining Cooperatives of Nowa Huta are the primary raw material suppliers for Kowalski's manufacturing operations — twelve cooperatives working the mineral deposits of the primary world's accessible geology. The cooperatives are nominally independent commercial entities; their supply contracts with Kowalski have been continuously renewed since the company's founding. The relationship is not formally exclusive but has functioned as exclusive for so long that the cooperatives' planning and investment decisions are effectively synchronized with Kowalski's production schedule.

Silence Topic

Stalownia Kowalski's equipment appears in the inventory records of extraction operations across the Reach, including several that operate in systems where the legal status of the extraction activities has not been clearly established under Assembly commercial and resource law. The company's position on this is consistent: it manufactures equipment, it sells equipment, it provides maintenance contracts for equipment. What the equipment is used for is the buyer's responsibility. This is legally defensible and has been successfully defended twice in Assembly commercial proceedings. The practical question — which Ferreira Monteiro at Matamba has declined to formally adjudicate — is whether a manufacturer who knows their equipment is being used in legally ambiguous extraction operations has obligations that the current framework does not capture.

Narrative Hook

A Kowalski field service technician, conducting routine maintenance on a drilling platform at a wave_5 frontier system, has found a modification to the equipment's operational logging that she does not recognize and that is not in any Kowalski service manual — a modification that, if she is reading it correctly, would cause the platform to transmit a secondary data stream to an address that is not the customer's operations center.

Calibration Note

M6Ve places GJ 896A at the cool, flare-active end of the M-dwarf sequence, consistent with the radiation-hardened industrial infrastructure detail. The "e" emission designation indicates regular flare activity, which drives the underground facility construction and daily operational protocols. The briefing designates K-type, but the profile specifies M6Ve; the header uses M-type to match the profile. Wave_3 settlement at hop 6 reflects the outer extension of the third emigration wave beyond the wave_2 junctions; the Kraków Junction connection provides the inward link that makes a hop-6 industrial system commercially viable.
