THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — NOWA HUTA
NOWA HUTA means "new steelworks" in Polish, after the industrial district built outside Kraków in the twentieth century — a name that carried complicated history when the founding families chose it, and that they chose deliberately, because this was a place being built from nothing to make things, and the name acknowledged the ambition and the difficulty without pretending the difficulty was not real.
What They Make
Stalownia Kowalski — Kowalski Steelworks — does not make steel. The name is inherited from the founding generation's original mining operation; the business is heavy equipment. Drilling platforms. Excavation rigs. Ore processing machinery. Habitat construction modules — the pressurized frames that new settlements use to establish their first generation of permanent infrastructure before local construction capacity exists. The third-generation Kowalski family started designing the equipment because the equipment they were importing was worse than what they could build. That is how these companies typically begin.
Three centuries of continuous operation have made Stalownia Kowalski the south Reach's most significant manufacturer of extraction and construction equipment. Every extraction system in the south Reach has at least one piece of Kowalski equipment in its operational inventory. A significant fraction of the west Reach's extraction operations run on Kowalski drilling platforms. Wave 4 and wave 5 frontier settlements used Kowalski habitat construction systems to establish their first pressurized environments. The company's sales are denominated in numbers that do not appear in public documents.
The equipment appears in the inventory records of extraction operations including several in systems where the legal status of the extraction activities has not been clearly established under Assembly commercial and resource law. The company's position is consistent: it manufactures equipment, it sells equipment, it provides maintenance contracts. What the equipment is used for is the buyer's responsibility. This has been successfully defended twice in Assembly commercial proceedings. Ferreira Monteiro at Matamba has declined to formally adjudicate the broader question.
The M6Ve Environment
The star flares. The manufacturing facilities are built underground or within heavily shielded structures — not from timidity, the company will tell you, but from three hundred years of empirical learning about what the M6Ve environment eventually does to unprotected equipment. The founding principle, attributed to the second-generation founder and repeated at every new employee orientation: build the equipment that survives the environment it operates in, not the environment you wish it operated in. That principle has been sustained across three hundred years by treating it as a constraint rather than an aspiration.
Practical Information
Nowa Huta is six hops from Gateway with three gate apertures — junction connecting Kraków Junction, the Lantern (GJ 388), and GJ 567. The settlement council is elected. Decisions that would significantly affect Kowalski's operations go to company leadership before reaching the council floor. This convention has persisted for two hundred years. The mining cooperatives that supply raw materials have been on continuously renewed contracts with Kowalski for the entire company history.
