Population

Cairnside is forty years old. The people who named it are still alive and running it, which shapes everything about how the community works and what it thinks it is.

The name was practical: the system sits beside Cairn, the empty 7-aperture hub one hop back toward Gateway. The settlers did not name it to claim permanence or signal ambition. They named it the way you mark a campsite — to record position, nothing more. That restraint is characteristic. These were materials scientists and structural engineers who chose this system for one specific reason: its star is variable, and a variable star is a laboratory.

K3Vvar means the star's output fluctuates. Light shifts across the spectrum, thermal output cycles over weeks and months, radiation environment varies on timescales that stable-star systems cannot replicate. Every other expedition that assessed this pocket looked at the variability and moved on. The Cairnside team looked at the same data and filed a charter.

Supply Dependency

Cairnside does not feed itself. The variable star makes long-term agriculture unreliable — thermal cycling disrupts seasonal patterns, the light shifts affect photosynthetic yields in ways that are predictable in aggregate but not in any given growing cycle. The settlers chose this, and they planned around it. Food arrives through Cairn's automated transit systems: scheduled freight runs, no permanent station staff, cargo dropped and collected at a horizon station that no one calls home.

The system's own export economy is potential, not realized. Forty years of materials research under variable stellar conditions has produced a dataset and a methodological toolkit that has no equivalent in the Reach. Materials certified for behavior under variable radiation, thermal cycling, and irregular stress patterns — flare-star infrastructure, deep-frontier stations, anything built at an environmental boundary — need what Cairnside can eventually provide. The team is aware of this. They are building toward certification capacity. The export economy that could anchor this settlement's long-term viability is approximately ten to fifteen years from maturity, by the research lead's own reckoning.

In the meantime, the settlement imports food, fuel, and consumables. The transit dependency through Cairn is not comfortable, but it is manageable. No one has missed a meal because of it.


Faction Notes

There is no Concord Assembly administrative office in Cairnside. The settlement arrived under a research charter, which carries different regulatory conditions than a standard colonial charter — lighter infrastructure requirements, reduced Commission oversight, an expectation that the founding body maintains internal governance until the settlement reaches a population threshold that triggers standard jurisdictional review. Cairnside has not reached that threshold.

The research team that filed the charter functions as the community's effective governance. The lead researcher — who is also the charter holder — makes most decisions that matter and refers others to a standing council that formed organically in the settlement's second decade. There are no elections scheduled. There is no process for holding them. This will eventually become a problem; it has not become one yet because the community is still small enough that the founding generation knows everyone personally.

Crown's Hollow, one hop from Cairn and two from Cairnside, is the nearest established system with any standing interest in this pocket. The Cairnside settlers were aware of Crown's Hollow's non-commercial access license to Cairn before they filed their charter — anyone reviewing the hop topology would have found it in the Commission's transit records. What it means for a constitutional monarchy to maintain a navigational reserve in an uninhabited hub is not something the Cairnside team has an answer to. The court has sent no communication to Cairnside. Cairnside has sent none to the court. The awareness runs in both directions. The silence is polite and probably temporary.


Silence Topic

The Cairnside research program generates two kinds of data. The first is materials science data — the primary output, the reason the settlement exists, the work the team publishes in technical formats for the handful of institutions that follow this field. The second is astrophysical data: forty years of precise, continuous observation of a variable star's output cycles, documented with instruments calibrated for materials research but accurate enough to constitute a serious record of stellar behavior.

The team has not published the astrophysical component. It is not their field. They lack the bandwidth to analyze it properly, and their funding mandate does not cover it. The data sits in their archive as a byproduct — documented, organized, and unexamined by anyone with the training to know what to look for.

What the K3Vvar output record shows about this star's long-term stability trajectory is a question no one at Cairnside has formally asked. The forty-year dataset is long enough that a stellar physicist examining it would find patterns that shorter observation windows cannot resolve. Whether those patterns describe a star behaving within normal variable parameters, or something else, is not a question the materials team has posed to anyone outside the settlement.

Crown's Hollow's non-commercial interest license to Cairn predates the Cairnside charter by decades. The research team's arrival in this pocket was facilitated through standard Assembly charter processes. Whether the charter application moved through that process unusually quickly, whether any external party had reason to encourage settlement in a system adjacent to Cairn, and what Crown's Hollow makes of researchers now living one hop from the hub it has quietly maintained access to — none of this is in any document the settlers have been given.


Narrative Hook

Forty years of continuous stellar observation, filed as materials research byproduct, sitting unanalyzed in a settlement where nobody has thought to ask what the star is actually doing.


Calibration Note

deep_frontier at hop_distance: 3 is the unusual pairing here. Deep frontier classification describes economic and institutional accessibility, not physical distance. Cairnside sits at the end of a spur that runs through Cairn, the empty 7-aperture hub. Cairn generates no economic traffic of its own — no residents, no local demand, no commercial routing that terminates there. The freight that transits Cairn does so because the hop topology is efficient for routes that need the shortcut; nothing is going to Cairn specifically, which means the two spur-end systems beyond it receive no incidental traffic from transit volume. The isolation that produces the deep_frontier designation is structural, not spatial. These systems are geographically close to Gateway and economically distant from everything.

wave_5 at hop_3 reinforces this. The hop_3 band was settled in wave_2 and wave_3 everywhere else. Cairnside's late arrival reflects the specific topology: this pocket had no economic rationale for settlement until a research team decided that the variable star itself was the resource worth coming for.
