THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — HOLMGREN'S PASSAGE
HOLMGREN'S PASSAGE is named for a man who did not stop here, which is precisely the correct name for a through-route system, and which the settlers who arrived later had the good sense not to change.
The Passage
Anders Holmgren mapped this route four hundred years ago, during Wave 2, when the north arc was still being threaded together and every new route required a survey team willing to go where the maps ended. He confirmed the connection and returned. Others settled it later. The name they chose was honest about what it was for.
The K-type star burns warmer than most of the outer north arc — amber rather than rust, real seasons, a habitable zone that allowed Wave 2 settlers to build planetary as well as orbital infrastructure. Four centuries of continuous occupation have produced a community with genuine depth: agriculture, manufacturing, accumulated institutional services — archiving, legal representation, medical facilities — that serve the outer reach beyond as well as the system itself.
The through-route connects to GJ 880 on one side and Okoro's Claim on the other. For most of Holmgren's history, the aperture toward what is now Okoro's Claim led to nothing. Forty years ago it led somewhere. The arrival of a frontier settlement one hop away changed the traffic profile at that aperture from negligible to active, and Holmgren's Passage is still adjusting to being a transit point for a community that has forty years of improvised decisions versus its own four centuries of institutional memory. The traders and operators who work both systems tend to keep the two communities' business separate. They bill accordingly.
The Archive
The Holmgren Transit Authority's records stretch back to the founding. Four centuries of cargo manifests, passenger logs, route confirmations. The archive is not publicly searchable, but it exists, and people who know it exists sometimes act accordingly.
The archive contains a passenger manifest from eighty years ago that a legal case currently pending at New Ballarat explicitly requested. The Transit Authority's response to the court was that the records for that date range were damaged in a systems failure. No one at the Transit Authority can precisely date or document this failure. The manifest remains unavailable. The case remains pending.
Practical Information
Holmgren's Passage is five hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 880 and Okoro's Claim. The Assembly liaison office has been continuously staffed for over two centuries; the current head has served fifteen years and is regarded as practically a local. The parliamentary system has chambers for planetary settlements and station population separately. The fee schedule for transit toward Okoro's Claim — which cannot afford historic rates but whose establishment Holmgren does not want to subsidize — is the current political tension.
