THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — KOSKINEN'S REACH
KOSKINEN'S REACH is named for the outer edge of explored territory as seen from where Eino Koskinen stood three hundred years ago, which means the name has been accurate ever since because no one has built anything significant beyond it.
The Spur End
Both of Koskinen's Reach's neighbors are unsettled or barely settled. The system connects to no significant hub in any direction. Its supply lines route through whichever of its two adjacent systems has the more reliable transit schedule, then through that system to the broader network. This is slow and expensive. The community has responded by developing high local self-sufficiency in consumables, which is the pragmatic response to a supply chain that cannot be relied upon to be convenient.
The binary star system — M5 primary with an orbiting companion — shapes the economics in ways the founders understood when they arrived: the gravitational interactions concentrate mineral deposits in zones that would not exist in a single-star system. The planet Koskinen's expedition surveyed first is not habitable but is resource-rich. The extraction economy has operated continuously since the founding without ever scaling to the levels that would attract corporate acquisition. The deposits are real but not spectacular. Transport costs to any significant processing hub are high. The community has found a sustainable equilibrium at a scale that makes outside investment unattractive. This suits most residents.
The Periapsis
On a roughly seventeen-year cycle, the binary stars make their closest orbital approach. The community has documented a periodic disruption in navigational reference systems that coincides with this event. It is minor and well-understood in practice. What causes it precisely is still debated in the technical literature. A minority hypothesis suggests involvement of the horizon station infrastructure — that aperture stability is marginally affected during the event. This hypothesis has not been elevated to formal inquiry because nothing has gone wrong yet.
The next periapsis is eight months away. A researcher from a university at Johannsen's Star arrived recently with credentials and a data-collection proposal. Their credentials check out perfectly. Their research questions are oriented toward the horizon station itself rather than the binary orbital dynamics they described in their proposal.
The Community Council is aware of this discrepancy. They are considering it through their consensus-based deliberative process, which is thorough, which means it is slow.
Practical Information
Koskinen's Reach is four hops from Gateway at the end of a spur. Three hundred years of relative isolation has produced a community with strong internal coherence and a somewhat suspicious orientation toward outsiders. Finnish in founding heritage, Finnish-leaning in current culture, council-governed, self-sufficient in consumables. The Assembly has no presence. The nearest Assembly office is multiple hops toward the inner reach. The community handles everything from infrastructure to inter-family disputes through the same deliberative process, and it works because the community is small enough that everyone knows the stakes of every decision.
