THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ASHWORTH JUNCTION
ASHWORTH JUNCTION has three gate apertures, a transit authority that predates its civilian community, and forty years to figure out which of those things is actually in charge.
The Potential
Petra Ashworth's survey team identified the unusual position: three viable aperture alignments, junction geometry with no comparable settled system within several hops. She filed the report with New Ballarat, recommended immediate development, and was named in the founding charter. Then she left, within a decade, and returned to New Ballarat. Her family members who stayed hold positions in the Transit Authority.
What followed the founding was rapid and chaotic: transit infrastructure first, then a construction workforce that became a permanent population faster than anyone planned, then an improvised governance structure still being negotiated. The three-gate junction is the system's entire identity and its entire risk. If the outer routes develop — toward Mabaso Junction and Prospect Hill — Ashworth Junction becomes significant. If they stall, it remains a young and relatively isolated community supporting transit infrastructure for traffic that has not yet fully materialized.
Whether the current traffic volumes are meeting the development projections submitted to New Ballarat is not publicly reported. The Transit Authority's position is that the junction is within normal development variance.
The Control Systems
A construction contractor who built the third aperture's control systems refused to leave when the contract ended. He has been running informal calculations for two years suggesting that one of the outer aperture alignments is not stable in the way the survey claimed. He has been trying to get someone at New Ballarat to look at the numbers. New Ballarat has not looked at the numbers.
The community council represents the broader civilian population. The Transit Authority has clearer legal standing and more formal authority over most decisions that matter. The relationship between the two bodies is the central political tension in a forty-year-old system that invented its dispute resolution mechanisms from scratch and has not had occasion to test them seriously.
Practical Information
Ashworth Junction is five hops from Gateway with three apertures connecting to New Ballarat, Mabaso Junction, and Prospect Hill. No habitable world — settlement is platform-based, station-built. The M4.5Ve primary is an active red dwarf. The Assembly presence is institutional and thin. The community's cultural character is still being formed, which means the English founder heritage named in the charter and the dozen other backgrounds that arrived with the construction workforce have not yet settled their claims.
Forty years is not long enough to know whether a community will hold.
