THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 868
GJ 868 has been informally named "Encontro" — "meeting" in Portuguese — by the two Portuguese corridor communities on either side of it, who have been calling it that for approximately a century and a half while disagreeing about whose governance model the eventual settlement would use.
The Meeting Place
Pedra Funda on one side. Dois Sóis on the other. Both Portuguese-heritage, both established, both using GJ 868 as a transit waypoint in the corridor between them. For generations the people of both communities have passed through on the way to trade and visit and conduct ordinary frontier corridor business. The empty world in the transit data has been present in both communities' awareness the entire time.
The primary world is a K-type habitable zone body: temperate conditions, adequate water, stable geology. Survey reports produced by both communities' own capabilities over the decades consistently describe a world that meets settlement criteria without presenting any unusual challenge or unusual opportunity. It is a good world. It is not a spectacular world. If the two communities could agree on whose governance model would govern it, it would have been settled a century ago.
The Governance Impasse
Joint settlement between two established communities with different internal governance structures requires agreeing on which structure the new settlement will inherit. Pedra Funda's synodal structure — a religious community functioning as civil government, religious and secular administration having merged over three centuries of isolation — is not obviously compatible with Dois Sóis' council governance, which emerged from a binary-stellar adaptation challenge and reflects the particular demands of that challenge. Each community believes the arrangement should favor its own governance model. Neither community believes this is unreasonable. The discussions have been frequent, warm, and inconclusive for a hundred and fifty years.
The name "Encontro" has no official standing. There is no settlement to register it. It persists in oral use among the people who move between the two communities, and appears in community records with the wistful quality of a name that belongs to a thing that does not quite exist.
Practical Information
GJ 868 is ten hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Pedra Funda and Dois Sóis. No services are available. The habitable world is temperate, stable, and unnamed in any official registry. Both corridor neighbors maintain informal standing as historical parties of interest. The discussions continue and remain warm.
