THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — KRUGER 60
KRUGER 60 is four hundred years old and looks it, which in this context is a compliment: the infrastructure is layered, the community is rooted, and the institutional memory visible in how disputes are resolved and streets are named is the kind that only time produces and cannot be installed from a kit.
The Third Gate
Two of Kruger 60's three gates are unremarkable — one runs inward to Lalande, one outward to GJ 644C. The third gate connects to Morales' End, a dead-end settlement with a single aperture and nowhere else to go. Kruger 60 is the only connection Morales' End has to the wider Reach. That relationship has been the defining feature of both communities for two centuries and is managed, by long practice, with the combination of mutual dependence and careful fiction of arm's-length commercial independence that such relationships tend to develop.
The Morales' End Supply Board maintains a permanent liaison office at Kruger 60's transit hub. Scheduling negotiations between the two systems have happened at that office for over two hundred years. The liaison staff know their counterparts socially and professionally. Both sides pretend to negotiate.
The third gate was not part of the original horizon station aperture assignment. It was opened approximately sixty years after initial settlement, under circumstances the official record describes as "routine horizon station aperture activation." What actually triggered the activation, and what the pre-activation state of Morales' End's station was, is a topic both communities approach with careful disinterest. The gate works. The past is complicated.
The Community
Wave 2 settlement, four centuries of continuous habitation, and the founding South African heritage — Afrikaner and Xhosa and Zulu names intermixed in the early records in the way that suggests the emigration wave drew across linguistic boundaries that had once separated those communities. Four hundred years of intermarriage have produced a community identity clearly descended from those roots without mapping cleanly onto any of them. The institutional conservatism that newer arrivals sometimes experience as rigidity, longtime residents call stability, and both characterizations are accurate in the way that descriptions of the same thing from different vantage points tend to be.
Governance is a community assembly with permanent guild seats for freight, maintenance, and agricultural operations — the Guild Assembly, which holds practical authority over most economic activity, coexisting with an elected council that handles civic matters through precedent established over long enough that it no longer requires explanation.
Practical Information
Kruger 60 is four hops from Gateway with three gate apertures — junction connecting Lalande, GJ 644C, and Morales' End. The M2V primary is a quiet red dwarf, more stable than the flare-active stars in neighboring systems, and the wave 2 construction that characterizes the older infrastructure was built for mass and durability over elegance. The buildings have outlasted their builders by several generations. Freight manifest records between here and GJ 644C show a small, consistent discrepancy between declared cargo volumes and gate passage mass readings. Individually within tolerance. Twenty years of consistency suggests something systematic. The Guild Assembly has not commented.
