Supply Dependency

Kumasi is a trading post in the oldest sense: a place where routes meet and goods change hands, sustained not by what the system produces but by what passes through it. The Asante-origin Mensah family arrived on the back of a DSMC mineral survey that identified modest extraction prospects in the system's outer belt. The extraction never became the system's economy. What became the economy was the position: Kumasi sits at hop 7 on the south_reach corridor, one hop past Van Maanen's Star, and ore haulers running DSMC contracts through the system needed supply, maintenance, and a place to resolve the paperwork that accumulates over long transit runs. The Mensah family provided these services. Three centuries of that work has produced the trading-post culture that is Kumasi's identity.

The system exports very little in the conventional sense. It facilitates the export of other systems' production — particularly the ore haulers moving DSMC bulk material through the Van Maanen's Star corridor and the agricultural surplus from Caparica's cooperative network. Kumasi's warehousing operations, contract brokerage services, and refueling infrastructure are the product. What it imports is everything a population needs to sustain itself, because the habitable body's agricultural capacity is limited and the Mensah family's commercial focus has always been on the transit economy rather than local self-sufficiency. Food comes primarily from the corridor behind it. The dependency is explicit and understood.

Faction Notes

The Mensah family has governed Kumasi since the founding period — not through a formal monarchy or hereditary title, but through the accumulated commercial and social standing of a family that has been the system's primary employer, principal landlord, and main interface with the outside Reach for generations. The family oligarchy is not a secret; it is the acknowledged structure of local governance, and it has been stable long enough that the alternatives — a cooperative that does not exist, a democratic assembly that no one has organized — remain theoretical. The family holds DSMC contract service agreements as its primary commercial relationship and has maintained those agreements across multiple DSMC administrative generations by being reliably useful and conspicuously non-threatening.

DSMC's presence is contractual rather than institutional. The corporation's ore haulers transit through Van Maanen's Star one hop behind Kumasi and continue through on runs that carry DSMC-branded freight. Kumasi provides the service hub for those runs — refueling, crew rotation, freight manifest processing — under the standing service contract the Mensah family has held since the second generation. DSMC does not govern Kumasi. It does not need to; the Mensah family manages the system's commercial relationship with the corporation more efficiently than DSMC's regional administration could from a distance.

The Guardians of Autonomy have a presence in the dockworker and warehouse labor communities — the people whose work sustains the trading-post economy without a share of its ownership. The relationship between the Guardians chapter and the Mensah family is the familiar south_reach dynamic: the family is not hostile to labor organization as long as it does not affect service reliability; the Guardians chapter has learned over generations which grievances the family will negotiate on and which it will not. The boundary is known by everyone and formally acknowledged by no one.

A system at hop 7 on a corridor where Commission enforcement is intermittent and the family that governs it has a financial interest in keeping freight moving is a system with structural opportunities for undocumented commerce. The Mensah family's manifest processing services have been handling south_reach freight for three centuries. The manifests are filed. They are formally correct. The Lattice Commission's south_reach inspection presence thins significantly past Van Maanen's Star, and Kumasi's position one hop beyond that thinning is not coincidental to the commercial logic of what the trading post actually facilitates. The family has never been formally charged with anything. The DSMC contract has been renewed in every cycle. The Commission's inspection schedule for Kumasi runs to every third year. The years between inspections are, for practical purposes, unmonitored.

Calibration Note

star_type: K0V at 35.2 light-years is a near-solar star — slightly cooler and less luminous than Sol but not significantly hostile. The habitable body exists and supports a population; what it does not do is support the kind of agricultural or extractive economy that would make Kumasi self-sufficient. This is consistent with the Early Arrival archetype the Mensah family represents: they came for a resource survey, found the transit position more valuable than the minerals, and built a system whose character is entirely a function of corridor position rather than planetary endowment.

gate_topology: through_route at hop 7 — one hop past Van Maanen's Star — is the configuration that makes Kumasi's trading-post role possible. The aperture toward Van Maanen's Star is the route through which the corridor's through-traffic arrives; the aperture toward Rionegro continues the corridor south. DSMC ore haulers running from deeper extraction operations pass through Van Maanen's Star and on through Kumasi. The trading-post function is a logical consequence of sitting at the first service-capable stop after the Reach's primary game-setting location.
