THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 853A
GJ 853A has commercial-grade mineral deposits, a habitable world, and corridor connectivity to settled systems on both sides — everything the early settlement economic models said was required — and has been empty for two centuries, which should prompt some review of those models.
Everything Required
The habitable world sits at the outer edge of its M-dwarf primary's habitable zone: technically within parameters, dim in the way that outer M-dwarf zones are dim. The atmosphere is breathable. Liquid water exists. The biological prerequisites are met. It is not warm and it is not well-lit, and the stellar output that sustains it provides enough energy for survival and not much of what the human body calls comfort. Living here without significant climate and lighting infrastructure is technically possible and practically unpleasant.
The mineral survey data is more straightforwardly appealing. The primary world's crust contains processed-goods precursors identified in the original survey as commercially significant by inner-corridor commodity standards. At hop six, that combination — habitable world plus mineral deposits — would have attracted a development operation within decades of the first survey. At hop eleven, with an M-dwarf primary and frontier logistics costs, the commercial calculus never quite closed.
The Prospectus Cycle
The survey data circulates in inner-corridor financial markets through speculative investment prospectuses that accurately describe the deposits, accurately describe the habitability profile, and somewhat understate the per-unit extraction cost at this distance. None of the prospectuses have produced funded development operations. Several commercial entities have filed exploratory interest claims. None have advanced to development applications.
The deposits remain in the crust. The surveys remain in the archive. The prospectus cycle repeats at irregular intervals, driven by the observation that the original data is accurate and the conclusion that this time the economics will pencil. The economics have not yet penciled. The next prospectus will contain the same figures with different formatting and the same conclusion with different confidence language.
Practical Information
GJ 853A is eleven hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 146 and GJ 616. No faction has a permanent presence. The mineral deposits are demonstrably present. The extraction cost at this depth is demonstrably real. The arbitrage between these two facts continues to support a small speculative literature.
