Supply Dependency
Hansestadt is the west corridor's commercial center and has been since Wave 2. The six-aperture hub configuration — the largest in the western sector by aperture count — means everything moving into or out of the deep west passes through here or routes around a significant detour. Most operators do not route around. Hansestadt levies transit tariffs on the freight that crosses its gates, and those tariffs have compounded for four hundred years into the economic foundation of a system that produces relatively little of its own and extracts considerable value from the production of everyone else.
The name is deliberate. Hansestadt — Hanseatic city — was chosen by the founding merchant council in Wave 2, referencing the historic Baltic trading league that organized commercial cities around mutual trade protection rather than territorial sovereignty. The founding council's thesis, which has been largely vindicated, was that a system positioned at the convergence of western gate paths could become the indispensable intermediary for a vast hinterland without needing to govern that hinterland. Hansestadt does not claim jurisdiction over the systems that depend on its gates. It simply charges for the crossing.
The six adjacent systems create an unusually complex routing matrix. Hansestadt's gate scheduling authority — the body that determines which vessel transits which aperture at what time — is technically neutral and technically operated by the Gate Corporation. In practice, the scheduling authority's staffing is deeply embedded in Hansestadt's commercial institutions, and the scheduling decisions that affect freight routing are made in coordination with the major trading houses that maintain permanent offices here. This is not corruption in the formal sense. It is how a four-hundred-year-old transit hub actually operates.
Faction Notes
Hansestadt's dominant institutional feature is the Merchant Assembly, a body with no official Assembly standing that nonetheless exercises more practical governance authority in the western sector than any of the Concord Assembly's delegations. The Merchant Assembly originated as the founding merchant council's commercial arbitration body — a private court that resolved trade disputes between west_reach operators to avoid the delay and cost of referring matters to the Concord Assembly at Gateway. Over four centuries, its precedents have accumulated into something that functions as a common law for the west corridor. Operators who want their contracts enforced by other operators need to be in good standing with the Merchant Assembly. This is a form of institutional authority that does not appear in any Concord charter.
The six adjacent systems each maintain permanent trade missions at Hansestadt. Three of them — GJ 502, GJ 357, and GJ 191 — have had representatives here continuously for over two hundred years. The relationships between those missions and the Merchant Assembly are the actual governance of the west corridor's commercial affairs.
The Concord Assembly has a delegation office at Hansestadt. It is appropriately staffed. Its delegates attend the Merchant Assembly's public sessions as observers. The relationship between the two bodies is formally cooperative and practically subordinate: the Merchant Assembly's decisions are the decisions that matter, and the Assembly delegation understands this. The delegation continues to file reports to Gateway describing the situation as one of constructive engagement.
At hop 5, Hansestadt sits in the zone where Assembly authority is intermittent. The Assembly is present enough to claim jurisdiction; Hansestadt is large and commercially complex enough that a confrontation would be costly. The equilibrium has held for a century.
Silence Topic
What Hansestadt does not examine openly: the relationship between its transit tariff structure and the economic pressure that has been pushing outer west_reach systems toward the Compact of Westphalia.
The Merchant Assembly's tariff schedules are publicly filed and commercially available. What they show, to anyone willing to analyze three centuries of data, is a systematic pattern: systems in the Compact zone are assessed at higher freight rates than systems of equivalent transit volume in the inner west. The Merchant Assembly's official position is that outer-corridor rates reflect higher maintenance costs and lower volume densities. The Compact's position — stated not to the Merchant Assembly but to anyone in the deep west who will listen — is that Hansestadt is levying a distance penalty on systems with no alternative routing, and that those systems' cumulative economic disadvantage over three centuries is the proximate reason the Compact was necessary in the first place. Neither position is entirely wrong. Neither institution is interested in the analysis proceeding any further.
Narrative Hook
The body that controls commercial traffic through the western sector's six-gate hub has been pricing the outer west out of the Assembly's economic orbit for three centuries, and some of its senior trade house principals have been quiet Compact of Westphalia sympathizers for two of them.
Calibration Note
hub topology at hop 5 reflects the genuine gate structure — six apertures are unusual at this distance from Gateway and make Hansestadt materially important in a way that determines its character. wave_2 settlement is consistent with deliberate early siting for commercial position; a merchant council that understood the gate topology's eventual western extension would choose exactly this position as early as possible. The M1V star is unremarkable in itself; the system's significance is entirely infrastructural, not environmental. The name "Hansestadt" communicates the founding logic without requiring explanation and fits cleanly in the Germanic corridor without being a direct Earth place-name transplant.
