THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — POSTO AVANÇADO
POSTO AVANÇADO means "forward post" — the place beyond the established line — and the wave 5 founders who named it forty years ago were both accurately describing their situation and slightly overestimating its romance.
The Connection
Before Posto Avançado existed, Velha Guarda — a four-hundred-year-old community at the end of a spur — connected to the Reach through a longer route. The wave 5 settlement created a shorter path between that ancient dead-end and the inner ring. The practical consequence is that Velha Guarda's supplies, its communications, its contact with the human world now route through a community that is approximately one-tenth its age and still building its infrastructure.
The relationship is the defining dynamic of both systems, and it is managed with the care of parties who need each other and are aware of the asymmetry. Velha Guarda has four centuries of institutional depth and is the larger customer. Posto Avançado has three thousand residents and controls the gate. The traffic is asymmetric: surplus and cultural goods outward from Velha Guarda, grain and manufactured supplies inward from Inhambane. Posto Avançado handles the freight and takes its margin.
The Forward Post's Practical Situation
The settlement is primarily underground, the M4 primary providing insufficient light for surface farming and inadequate UV shielding during flare events. Subsurface ice feeds the water supply. The Assembly transit authority's wave 5 network-gap settlement incentive funded the founding and included, in the standard clause language, scheduling priority at the system's gates during the subsidy period — a clause the founding families accepted without significant negotiation because the financial terms were the priority, not the scheduling terms. The subsidy phases out within the decade. The clause phases out with it. The founding families intend to let it expire quietly without drawing attention to it by raising it.
The interim council, which has been interim for the entire forty years of the settlement, has approved a construction contract for expanded freight handling capacity — capacity that significantly exceeds what the current corridor would require. The contract went to a firm registered at Crux Station. A Velha Guarda elder visiting to manage the supply relationship has noticed the discrepancy and has been unable to locate the contracting firm in any south Reach commercial directory.
Practical Information
Posto Avançado is six hops from Gateway with two gate apertures — spur end connecting Inhambane and Velha Guarda. Population approximately three thousand, still in the process of deciding what it is. Electoral governance is formally the next institutional milestone. The interim council has not scheduled it.
