THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — SEIÐRMAÐR

SEIÐRMAÐR is the name that Seiðrmaðr's trade partners gave it, not the name the residents chose — because the residents named the system something unmemorable in their founding charter, and trade partners were not about to use it, because the people here make things that shouldn't work as well as they do, and "the sorcerer" is what you call that.

The Problem With The Coils

Gate ferry drive coils require field-shaping tolerances that, according to standard fabrication theory, require manufacturing equipment orders of magnitude more expensive than a dead-end system at hop 6 should be able to support. Seiðrmaðr produces them anyway, and the Gate Corporation has tested them extensively and confirmed they perform to specification, and three competing manufacturers have attempted to replicate the design from the product itself, and none have succeeded.

This is one of the few genuinely interesting unsolved problems in the western corridor's commercial manufacturing sector, and Seiðrmaðr's residents do not discuss it.

The Design Criterion

The founding engineers, fabricators, and applied scientists established a founding charter with two explicit requirements: isolation and control of the gate. They paid the Gate Corporation's founding tariff in full at establishment, which bought them the scheduling rights over the single aperture that other systems spend decades negotiating toward. One gate, one path in and out, and they own the schedule. What happens inside the gate is their business.

Tiefwerk AG is the company they formed. It is also the government, in that it owns and operates everything, employs everyone, and makes every institutional decision. The residents chose to come here knowing the terms. The waiting list for Tiefwerk positions is long. The Assembly has not visited. The Assembly has not been asked to visit. Tiefwerk pays its commercial registrations because the Gate Corporation requires certified transit components to carry Assembly registration, and this is the extent of Assembly-Seiðrmaðr diplomatic relations.

The manufacturing technique that produces the coils is called "resonance templating" internally. It has not been patented. Patents require disclosure. Disclosure would invite attention. The knowledge lives in people, several of whom are Perpetuals, and the people who know it built this dead-end specifically to be the kind of place that knowledge could stay undisturbed.

Practical Information

Seiðrmaðr is six hops from Gateway with one aperture connecting to Port Mäkelä. The M2V primary is compact and stable, which was the point. The Compact of Westphalia has no formal relationship with the system. The Assembly has no practical relationship with the system. The Gate Corporation has the most productive relationship with the system, which consists of buying what Tiefwerk makes and not asking how they make it.
